Job description

Cytogenetic Technologist – ASCP Certified

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented ASCP Certified Cytogenetic Technologist to join our laboratory team. The ideal candidate will have experience performing cytogenetic testing and analysis to support the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of genetic disorders, hematologic diseases, and malignancies.

Position Summary

The Cytogenetic Technologist is responsible for performing laboratory procedures related to chromosome analysis, karyotyping, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), specimen processing, and other specialized cytogenetic techniques. This role ensures accurate test performance, quality control, and compliance with all laboratory and regulatory standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform cytogenetic testing procedures including cell culture setup, harvesting, slide preparation, chromosome banding, and karyotype analysis.
  • Conduct and interpret fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) studies and other molecular cytogenetic assays.
  • Analyze specimens from bone marrow, peripheral blood, amniotic fluid, tissue, and other sample types.
  • Prepare, document, and report accurate laboratory findings in accordance with laboratory protocols.
  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and imaging systems.
  • Ensure compliance with CAP, CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, and laboratory safety regulations.
  • Participate in quality control, quality assurance, proficiency testing, and competency assessments.
  • Maintain laboratory documentation, records, and specimen tracking within the laboratory information system (LIS).
  • Collaborate with pathologists, geneticists, and other healthcare professionals regarding test results and workflow.
  • Assist with validation and implementation of new procedures and technologies as needed.
  • Maintain inventory and laboratory supplies.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Cytogenetics, Medical Laboratory Science, Biology, Genetics, or related scientific field required.
  • Current ASCP certification as Cytogenetic Technologist (CG) required.
  • Previous cytogenetics laboratory experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of chromosome analysis, FISH techniques, and cytogenetic laboratory procedures.
  • Experience with imaging and karyotyping software preferred.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
Work Schedule
  • Full-time / Part-time opportunities available
  • Day, evening, or rotating shifts depending on facility needs
  • Occasional weekends or on-call responsibilities may be required
