What is an on call concierge?

On Call Concierges are service professionals who provide personalized assistance to clients on an as-needed basis, rather than during set hours or shifts. Their responsibilities often include making reservations, arranging transportation, handling special requests, and providing information about local attractions or services. Unlike traditional concierges who work at a fixed location, On Call Concierges are available remotely or in-person, depending on client needs. This flexible role is often found in luxury residential buildings, hotels, or for private clients seeking tailored support.

What does an on call concierge do during a typical shift, and how is the work schedule structured?

As an On Call Concierge, your shifts are often variable and can include evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on client or resident needs. You may receive short-notice requests to cover absences or handle special events, so flexibility and quick adaptability are crucial. During a shift, responsibilities typically involve greeting guests, managing requests, coordinating services such as transportation or reservations, and liaising with vendors. The team structure is usually supportive, with communication tools in place to keep you connected with property management or client coordinators.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an on call concierge, and why are they important?

To thrive as an On Call Concierge, you need excellent customer service skills, strong organizational abilities, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with property management software, reservation systems, and communication tools is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, discretion, and the ability to multitask under pressure help someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure prompt, professional service delivery and create a positive experience for clients and residents in dynamic environments.

This opening is specifically for on-call Residential Concierges who can provide reliable, ongoing availability to help cover staffing needs across Compass properties in DC, Virginia, and Maryland.
On-call employees are scheduled based on the weekly availability they submit and are not guaranteed a set number of hours or a permanent weekly schedule. Compass requires on-call employees to keep their availability current and generally work or make themselves available for at least 2โ€“3 shifts per week and two weekends a month.

Pay: $19โ€“$20 per hour
This position is best suited for someone looking for flexible or supplemental work who can maintain dependable weekly availability.
The Role
At Compass Concierge, we donโ€™t just staff a desk. We create an experience.
As an On-Call Residential Concierge, you provide coverage when Compass properties have open shifts or additional staffing needs. Because you may work at different residential communities, you must be adaptable, comfortable learning new environments, and able to provide consistent Compass-level service wherever you are assigned.
This is not casual or last-minute gig work. Once you request or accept a shift and are confirmed to work, you are expected to report on time and fulfill that commitment.
What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Greet and assist residents, guests, vendors, and prospective residents
  • Manage visitor access, packages, deliveries, and resident requests
  • Learn and follow property-specific procedures and expectations
  • Communicate professionally with residents, property management, and Compass leadership
  • Maintain accurate shift notes, incident documentation, and building records
  • Monitor lobby activity and maintain a professional front-desk environment
  • Respond appropriately to resident concerns, unexpected situations, and emergencies
  • Adapt quickly when working at different Compass properties

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • Strong customer-service and communication skills
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality
  • The ability to adapt quickly to different properties and procedures
  • Professional judgment and comfort working independently
  • Strong written communication and attention to detail
  • Calm and professional handling of difficult situations
  • Comfort learning technology and property-management systems
  • Professional appearance and workplace conduct
  • A reliable transportation or commuting plan for the areas you identify as available
  • Ongoing availability for at least 2โ€“3 shifts per week and every other weekend

Previous residential Concierge experience is a plus, but not required. We welcome candidates from hospitality, hotels, property management, luxury retail, corporate reception, private clubs, senior living, and other high-touch customer-service environments.
How On-Call Scheduling Works

On-call employees are required to update their availability each week in Compass's payroll and scheduling system. Available hours are based on staffing needs and are not guaranteed. Employees are paid for the hours they actually work and train.
When you accept an approved shift, Compass and the employee you may be relieving are counting on you to report as scheduled. Consistent communication and reliability are essential to remaining active on the on-call team.
The Right Fit
You may be a strong fit if you:

  • Want flexible or supplemental work
  • Can provide meaningful weekly availability
  • Enjoy variety and working in different residential communities
  • Learn new procedures quickly
  • Are dependable once you commit to a shift
  • Work well independently
  • Want to gain experience across multiple properties
  • Are interested in being considered for permanent Compass opportunities as they become available
