An Oil Tech, or Lube Technician, is responsible for performing basic vehicle maintenance services, such as oil changes, fluid checks, and filter replacements. They inspect vehicles for potential issues, ensure proper lubrication, and follow safety guidelines to keep engines running efficiently. To thrive as an Oil Tech, you need mechanical aptitude, knowledge of automotive systems—especially lubrication and oil change procedures—and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with vehicle lifts, oil viscosity measurement tools, and commonly used diagnostic equipment is important, with some employers preferring certifications like ASE (Automotive Service Excellence). Attention to detail, strong customer service skills, and the ability to work efficiently as part of a team are valuable soft skills. These competencies are essential to ensure accurate service, customer satisfaction, and safety in a fast-paced automotive environment.
