An Oil Tech, or Lube Technician, is responsible for performing basic vehicle maintenance services, such as oil changes, fluid checks, and filter replacements. They inspect vehicles for potential issues, ensure proper lubrication, and follow safety guidelines to keep engines running efficiently. Oil Techs typically work in automotive shops, dealerships, or service centers and may assist with tire rotations and other minor repairs. To thrive as an Oil Tech, you need mechanical aptitude, knowledge of automotive systems—especially lubrication and oil change procedures—and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with vehicle lifts, oil viscosity measurement tools, and commonly used diagnostic equipment is important, with some employers preferring certifications like ASE (Automotive Service Excellence). Attention to detail, strong customer service skills, and the ability to work efficiently as part of a team are valuable soft skills. These competencies are essential to ensure accurate service, customer satisfaction, and safety in a fast-paced automotive environment.
A typical day for an Oil Tech involves performing oil changes, replacing filters, checking and topping off other vehicle fluids, and conducting basic inspections of vehicle systems such as brakes and tires. You'll often interact directly with customers to review their service needs and may recommend routine maintenance based on service intervals. The role requires working efficiently, sometimes under time constraints, as part of a team in a busy shop environment. You’ll also be responsible for maintaining a clean work area and following all safety protocols. Many Oil Techs gain valuable hands-on experience that can lead to advanced technician positions with additional training and certifications.

We will train you how to be a lube technician who can change oil, replace wiper blades/air filters, fill air in tires, and perform other light maintenance services. All you need to do is be willing to learn, work hard, and bring a positive attitude to the shop!
Up to $15/hr with base pay and commissions!
Some of our most successful lube technicians are those that joined the team with no experience at all, but many others were once servers, restaurant workers, mechanics, retail employees, landscapers, and other skilled trade workers!
