A typical day for an Oil Tech involves performing oil changes, replacing filters, checking and topping off other vehicle fluids, and conducting basic inspections of vehicle systems such as brakes and tires. The role requires working efficiently, sometimes under time constraints, as part of a team in a busy shop environment. You’ll also be responsible for maintaining a clean work area and following all safety protocols. Many Oil Techs gain valuable hands-on experience that can lead to advanced technician positions with additional training and certifications.
To thrive as an Oil Tech, you need mechanical aptitude, knowledge of automotive systems—especially lubrication and oil change procedures—and often a high school diploma or equivalent.
