What is an oil radiographer?

Oil radiographers are specialized professionals who use radiographic imaging techniques, such as X-rays or gamma rays, to inspect and evaluate the integrity of pipes, welds, and equipment in the oil and gas industry. Their work helps detect potential flaws, corrosion, or weaknesses that could lead to failures or leaks. Oil radiographers play a crucial role in maintaining safety and quality standards in pipelines and industrial installations. They must adhere strictly to safety protocols due to the use of radiation and often work in challenging environments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an oil radiographer?

To thrive as an Oil Radiographer, you need a solid understanding of non-destructive testing (NDT) principles, radiographic imaging techniques, and safety protocols, typically supported by certifications such as ASNT Level II or III and relevant radiation safety licenses. Familiarity with radiographic equipment, film processing systems, and digital imaging software is essential for accurate inspection and reporting. Attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and effective communication are important soft skills for accurately identifying flaws and collaborating with engineering teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure equipment integrity, operational safety, and regulatory compliance in the oil and gas industry.

What challenges do oil radiographers face on-site, and how can they be addressed?

Oil Radiographers often encounter challenges such as working in remote or harsh environments, adhering to strict safety protocols, and managing complex equipment under time constraints. To address these, it’s important to stay up-to-date with safety training, maintain strong communication with team members, and plan thoroughly before each inspection to ensure all equipment is in good condition. Building adaptability and problem-solving skills will help you respond effectively to unexpected situations and ensure high-quality results.

Job description

BodySpec is hiring a licensed Radiologic Technologist to specialize in DEXA (bone density and body composition) scanning in our Miami storefront. This is a DEXA-only role focused on preventive health, ideal for a technologist who enjoys working directly with patients, prefers a calmer environment than a hospital, and likes having some variety in their workdays without giving up clinical quality or professionalism. We're the premier DEXA operator in the country, helping people understand and improve their health through accessible body composition scanning.
First-year Radiologic Technologists in Miami, FL can expect to earn up to $81,920+ in total cash compensation (starting at $34/hour, $70,720 annualized at 40 hrs/week), plus equity.
You'll Love This Job If You Have:
  • Customer Service: You work in a customer service and client-facing role and love one-on-one interaction but don't enjoy trying to build your own book of business and worrying about biz dev every month.
  • Passion for Health and Wellness: You're a health enthusiast and believe that health is for everyone, that it's a privilege to help others reach their goals, to share in their successes, and comfort them through their struggles.
  • Grit: You're the type of person who doesn't mind getting up early to beat traffic so you can get somewhere on time. You're not intimidated by driving a van, and you're not afraid to get your hands dirty and change the oil.
  • Curiosity: You are energized by being in a new environment every day, seeing new sights and meeting new people.
  • Resourcefulness: When you see something broken, you don't wait for someone else to fix it, but rather propose solutions and become part of implementing them.
What Will You Do?
  • Perform DEXA scans for clients in our Miami storefront and at community events using our mobile scan vans, delivering a polished one-on-one experience for dozens of people each shift.
  • Walk every client through their results, explaining what the scan shows and answering their questions with warmth and clarity.
  • Take ownership of your scanning days from setup to breakdown, whether you're in the storefront or at a mobile event.
  • Receive full training, including a paid training week in Austin, TX, plus our required device-specific bone densitometry training.
  • Help with light administrative work and equipment care between scans.
  • Jump into whatever else the Leadership Team needs. Small team, lots of variety.
Requirements
  • Based in Miami, FL and able to work in-person at our storefront and mobile events.
  • Available full-time on a fixed Wednesday-Sunday schedule, which includes both weekend days every week and qualifies for the weekend bonus described below. Shifts are 8 hours, with start times typically ranging between 7:00am and 12:00pm depending on location and event timing.
  • Must hold an active Florida General Radiographer certification (issued by the Florida Department of Health) and ARRT certification, and be a graduate of an accredited School of Radiologic Technology. We provide the required device-specific bone densitometry training.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to thrive with direct, unfiltered feedback. We'll tell you exactly what you need to improve.
Compensation
First-year Radiologic Technologists in Miami, FL can expect to earn up to $81,920+ in total cash compensation, plus equity.
  • Hourly Rate: $34/hour ($70,720 annualized at 40 hrs/week)
  • Performance Bonus: $500/month (FT), for up to $6,000 a year
  • Weekend Bonus: $100/week for working both Saturday and Sunday, which this schedule qualifies for every week ($5,200 annually)
  • Annual Bonus: Cash + stock options, based on performance
  • Guaranteed Pay: Guaranteed weekly pay equivalent to 30 hours of work, with the opportunity to earn more by working more
  • Overtime: Eligible for overtime pay on an as-needed basis
  • Total Cash Compensation: Up to $81,920+ (before annual cash + stock bonus)
  • Equity: Stock options through your annual bonus, plus additional grants based on performance

All team members regardless of position are eligible for additional stock option grants and profit sharing based on performance. We expect both cash and equity compensation to grow as the company scales.
Benefits
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Paid time off
  • Sick leave
  • $75/month commute reimbursement
  • $10/shift meal stipend
  • Company-wide peer bonus program for recognizing excellent teamwork
  • Employee assistance program
  • Regular team events (both virtual and in-person)
