Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The Field Mechanic is a critical role responsible for the high-level maintenance, diagnostic troubleshooting, and repair of both stationary asphalt plant equipment, mobile heavy machinery, and on-road assets. This position operates primarily in the field, traveling to various plant sites to ensure maximum operational uptime and efficiency.

As a key member of the maintenance team, the Field Mechanic must embody Martin Marietta's 'Safety First' culture, prioritizing a zero-incident environment while performing complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical repairs. The role requires a highly motivated individual capable of working independently in various outdoor environments to support the production of hot mix asphalt materials.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair asphalt plant components, including conveyor systems, shakers, screens, pumps, gearboxes, crushers, and burners.
  • Perform skilled mechanical repairs on diesel-powered mobile equipment (loaders, haul trucks, pavers) including engine rebuilds, transmission repairs, and the removal/installation of major mechanical parts.
  • Utilize cutting torches, welders (MIG/TIG/Stick), and grinders to perform field fabrication, structural repairs, and equipment modifications.
  • Execute scheduled PM services and lubrication protocols according to manufacturer specifications and Martin Marietta's Maintenance Module.
  • Conduct oil sampling, filter changes, and pressure testing to identify potential failures before they occur.
  • Maintain accurate electronic and paper documentation of all work performed, materials used, and equipment health status.
  • Perform intermediate to advanced troubleshooting of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
  • Use diagnostic software and tools (CAT ET, scanners) to analyze engine performance and system faults on modern heavy equipment.
  • Interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and hydraulic/electrical schematics to execute precise repairs.
  • Actively participate in all safety initiatives, including SLAM (Stop, Look, Analyze, Manage) and pre-shift safety inspections of work areas and equipment.
  • Conduct mandatory OSHA pre-shift safety inspections of work areas and equipment.
  • Strictly adhere to Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures and all company safety initiatives (Guardian Angel Creed).
  • Actively participate in the hazard recognition program by documenting near-misses and implementing safety improvements.
  • Maintain a clean and organized service truck and work area to prevent hazards and ensure environmental compliance.
  • Collaborate with Plant Managers and Superintendents to prioritize backlogs and minimize production downtime.
  • Operate support equipment such as cranes, man-lifts, loaders, and haul trucks in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Mentor and coach junior maintenance staff and plant operators on best practices for equipment care and minor repairs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Vocational training or relevant experience

CDL Class A, preferred

Work Experience

1+ years of experience in Heavy Equipment Maintenance specifically with brands such as CAT, Komatsu, Volvo, or John Deere. Asphalt experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. for plant maintenance and equipment servicing.

Required to bend, stoop, climb, and reach. You must be able to maintain three points of contact when climbing on/off machinery or on ladders.

Strong hand-eye-foot coordination is essential for operating hand/foot controls. You must have good depth perception with or without seeing aid for distances up to 150 feet.

Working Conditions

All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry and dusty.andnbsp;Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.

Must supply own working set of mechanical tools (check with local shop for specific details).
