What is an offshore installation manager?

An Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) is the person responsible for the overall safety, operation, and management of an offshore oil or gas platform. The OIM oversees all personnel and activities on the installation, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and company procedures. They coordinate emergency response, supervise maintenance and drilling operations, and act as the primary liaison between offshore crews and onshore management. Their leadership is vital for maintaining productivity and ensuring the well-being of everyone on the platform.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an offshore installation manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Offshore Installation Manager, you need extensive knowledge of offshore operations, safety regulations, and leadership experience, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field and relevant offshore certifications. Familiarity with asset management systems, emergency response protocols, and industry-specific software such as Permit to Work systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, decision-making, and crisis management skills set outstanding managers apart. These competencies are vital for ensuring operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and the safety of personnel in complex offshore environments.

What are the primary challenges an offshore installation manager faces when leading a multidisciplinary team on a remote platform?

Offshore Installation Managers (OIMs) often encounter challenges related to coordinating diverse teams—such as engineers, safety officers, and maintenance crews—while ensuring operations run smoothly in an isolated environment. Communication can be complex due to shift patterns and varying expertise levels, making clear delegation and regular briefings essential. Additionally, OIMs must balance operational efficiency with strict safety and environmental regulations, all while managing logistical constraints that come with being offshore. Developing strong leadership and problem-solving skills is crucial for overcoming these challenges and fostering a positive, high-performing team culture.

What is the difference between Offshore Installation Manager vs Offshore Installation Supervisor?

The Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) is responsible for the overall management of offshore installation projects, including safety, operations, and team coordination. In contrast, the Offshore Installation Supervisor focuses on supervising daily on-site activities, ensuring safety compliance and operational efficiency. Both roles require safety certifications and industry experience, but the OIM holds a broader managerial scope.

How much do offshore installation managers make?

Offshore installation managers typically earn between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of projects. They often work long shifts in challenging environments and require certifications such as BOSIET or HUET. Salaries can vary based on industry demand and company size.

  • Proficiency with small hand and power tools
  • Familiarity with marine mechanical and electrical assemblies
  • Experience operating and maintaining small boats in coastal environments, including docking, trailering, routine maintenance, and safe vessel operations. Minimum of 2 years of boating experience preferred
  • Current state-sponsored Boater Card, or ability to study for and obtain one
  • Ability to operate independently and take ownership of tasks and outcomes while exercising sound judgment and recognizing when to seek additional support or guidance
  • Demonstrated professionalism, adaptability, and a team-oriented mindset; able to remain calm, effective, and solution-focused in demanding field environments
  • Valid U.S. Passport
  • Valid U.S. Driver's License

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience conducting field operations in remote locations, including troubleshooting, maintenance, and mission support under challenging environmental conditions
  • Familiarity with IP-based networking, including device configuration, network troubleshooting, and communications systems used in remote or autonomous operations
  • Experience supporting prototype development and testing through electromechanical assembly, machining, welding, and hardware integration
  • Familiarity or experience with uncrewed systems
  • Bachelor's or Associate degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, marine engineering, or a related field
