How much do offshore blasting jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for offshore blasting in the United States is $18.94, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.83 and $20.43 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Offshore Blasting Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Offshore Blasting Technician, you need expertise in surface preparation, abrasive blasting techniques, and knowledge of safety regulations, typically supported by relevant vocational training or certifications like OPITO or NACE. Familiarity with high-pressure blasting equipment, respiratory protection systems, and safety management systems is essential. Attention to detail, strong teamwork, and communication skills help ensure safe and efficient operations in challenging offshore environments. These competencies are critical for maintaining structural integrity, minimizing hazards, and meeting strict industry standards.

What is the difference between Offshore Blasting vs Onshore Blasting?

AspectOffshore BlastingOnshore Blasting
Work EnvironmentMarine or offshore drilling sites, often in challenging weather conditionsLand-based construction, mining, or demolition sites
Required CertificationsBlasting licenses, offshore safety certifications, HSE trainingBlasting licenses, safety certifications, sometimes specialized for mining or construction
Industry UsageOil & gas, offshore construction, marine projectsMining, construction, demolition

Offshore Blasting involves handling explosives in marine environments, requiring specialized safety and offshore certifications. Onshore Blasting is performed on land, often in mining or construction, with similar licensing but different environmental considerations. Both roles demand strict safety protocols, but the work settings and specific certifications differ based on location and industry.

What is offshore blasting?

Offshore blasting is a process used in marine and offshore environments to remove old coatings, rust, or contaminants from surfaces such as ship hulls, oil rigs, and pipelines. This is typically achieved using high-pressure abrasive materials or water jets to clean and prepare metal surfaces for repainting or maintenance. Offshore blasting is essential for maintaining the integrity and safety of marine structures exposed to harsh sea conditions. The work is often performed by skilled technicians who follow strict safety and environmental guidelines.

What are some of the common challenges faced by Offshore Blasting professionals, and how can they be managed on the job?

Offshore Blasting professionals frequently encounter challenges such as working in harsh weather conditions, maintaining strict safety standards, and managing time constraints due to tight project schedules. To manage these challenges, it is important to stay up-to-date with safety protocols, maintain clear communication with team members, and be proactive in identifying potential hazards. Teamwork and adaptability are vital, as tasks often require close coordination with other trades and supervisors to ensure operations run smoothly and efficiently.
