What is an off the books driver?

An off the books driver is someone who provides driving services without officially reporting their employment or income to authorities. This means they are paid in cash or other forms that are not documented for tax or legal purposes. While this arrangement can sometimes offer flexibility, it is important to note that working off the books is illegal in many places, can result in a lack of legal protections for the driver, and may have serious consequences for both the driver and the employer if discovered.

What are common risks and challenges faced by drivers working in informal or 'off the books' roles?

Drivers working in informal or 'off the books' roles often face unique challenges, such as lack of official employment protections, uncertain or irregular pay, and minimal access to benefits like health insurance or paid time off. Additionally, there may be legal and tax risks associated with unreported income. It's important for job seekers to consider these factors carefully, prioritize safety, and weigh the long-term impact on their career before accepting such a position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Driver, you need a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and thorough knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving practices. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, vehicle maintenance basics, and sometimes certifications for specific vehicle types (like CDL for trucks) are often required. Strong attention to detail, punctuality, and good customer service skills help drivers excel in their roles. These skills ensure reliable, safe transportation and build trust with employers and clients.

Job description

Drive with Albany Trucking - Home Time, Steady Miles, and Respect

If you're looking for a driving career that values your time on and off the road, Albany Trucking is your kind of company. Known for its laid-back atmosphere and driver-first policies, Albany offers flexibility, consistent miles, and strong communication - without the pressure of being forced to stay out longer than you want.

Whether you're running Over-the-Road or on a Dedicated route, Albany Trucking ensures you're home every 10-14 days, or sooner if needed. Our drivers typically run for two weeks and get two days off - but if life happens, Albany Trucking makes it easy to get home when you need to. Dedicated lanes vary, but home time is just as reliable.

What Makes Albany Trucking Different?

At Albany Trucking, you're not just a number - your dispatcher is required to check in with you daily, and you'll always know your next load before you drop the current one. That means no more sitting around waiting - and no-touch, dry van freight that's 70% drop-and-hook helps keep your wheels moving. Most loads are automotive, running primarily east of I-35 with an average haul length of 500 miles. Weekly solo mileage ranges from 2,500-2,800, with some hitting 3,000+.

Competitive Weekly Pay Structure

  • Base pay ranges from $0.45 to $0.55 CPM, based on location

  • Earn up to $750/month in performance bonuses

  • Average weekly pay: $1,300 to $1,500, based on miles and hiring area

  • All miles paid: loaded, empty, and bobtail

  • Weekly pay via direct deposit or Comdata

Top-Notch Equipment & Terminals

You'll be driving equipment that's never older than three years, with a fleet of mostly Peterbilt 579s, plus Internationals and Freightliners. All trucks come with inverters, fridges, and Qualcomm systems. Take your truck and trailer home - just ensure secure parking unless you live within 50 miles of a terminal.

We have terminals in Tontitown, AR; Laredo, TX; Irving, TX; North Jackson, OH; and Charlotte, NC.

Benefits & Bonuses

Albany Trucking offers comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage starting on the first day of the month following 60 days of employment. A 401K retirement plan with a company match is also available. Drivers receive one week of paid vacation after their first year, two weeks after two years, and up to three weeks after five years. Detention and layover pay are available and vary by customer. Orientation consists of a three-day session, with meals and transportation provided, and drivers are paid $200 for completing it.

Pet & Rider Policies
For those in lease-purchase positions, Albany allows dogs of any size with no weight restrictions. Company solo drivers, however, are not permitted to have pets. Riders are welcome-immediate family members must be at least 13 years old, and non-family riders must be 18 or older.

Want to Try Something New?

Albany supports growth - switch from OTR to Dedicated or Local when spots open in your area. Ready to mentor? You can train new drivers for extra pay, too.
