Off Premise Manager information

What is an off premise manager?

An Off Premise Manager is responsible for overseeing and executing sales and marketing strategies for products sold outside of a company's physical locations, such as in retail stores, online platforms, or through third-party vendors. Their main duties include building relationships with external partners, managing distribution channels, and ensuring product visibility and availability off-site. This role is especially common in industries like food and beverage, where off premise sales are a significant part of overall revenue.

What are the typical challenges an off premise manager faces in coordinating with retail partners and distributors?

Off Premise Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning brand goals with retailers' priorities, managing inventory to meet demand, and ensuring promotional activities are executed as planned. They must maintain strong relationships with distributors and retail partners while navigating competing interests and tight deadlines. Effective communication, negotiation skills, and adaptability are essential for resolving conflicts and maximizing sales in diverse off-premise channels.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an off premise manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Off Premise Manager, you need strong sales acumen, experience in beverage or consumer goods distribution, and often a bachelor’s degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, inventory management systems, and data analytics tools is typically required. Excellent negotiation, relationship-building, and organizational skills help you effectively collaborate with retailers and manage multiple accounts. These skills ensure the successful execution of sales strategies, efficient account management, and sustained business growth in competitive markets.

Job description

This position is based at our headquarters in Alexandria, VA.

The Director – Digital Off-Premise and Catering is a senior commercial leader responsible for leading the strategy, performance, and profitability of Five Guys’ digital off-premise and catering businesses. This includes all third-party delivery marketplaces, first-party ordering and delivery through the Five Guys’ app and ordering website, and catering platform partnerships. The role works cross-functionally with Marketing, Operations, Finance, IT, Legal, and Supply Chain teams to deliver system-wide menu, pricing, and promotional launches; ensure strong store execution and seamless guest experience; and maintain KPI dashboards and reporting that drive action.

The Digital Off-Premise and Catering Director is responsible for working with Five Guys’ partners to increase revenue, expand market share, and enhance brand reach.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

First Party Delivery

• Manage first-party delivery through the Five Guys’ app and website, including performance of vendor integrations, order routing, and checkout experience: partner with IT and Operations to maintain reliability and speed.

• Manage partnerships and integrations with existing vendors (Olo) and lead any required RFPs/RFIs

Third Party Marketplace and Delivery

• Lead relationships with third-party delivery providers (DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub, etc.), including business reviews, commercial contract negotiations, issue resolution, and new capability rollouts.

• Build and execute the marketplace promotional calendar (offers, ads, sponsored placements) in partnership with Brand Marketing; optimize funding and spend to maximize incremental profit and ROI.

• Manage partnerships and integrations with existing vendors (Checkmate) and lead any required RFPs/RFIs

Catering

• Lead the ongoing development of Five Guys’ catering program, including pricing, ordering experience, and fulfillment model to include any required RFPs/RFIs with potential catering partners.

• Manage catering channel partners and platforms (first-party and third-party platforms to include ezCater) and coordinate catering lead generation, local marketing toolkits, and store execution.

Overall Off-Premise Management

• Own the strategy and annual plan for digital off-premise and catering, delivering sales and profit targets for Company and Franchise restaurants. Demonstrate strategic leadership with strong execution, effectively communicating channel strategy and resolving operational and technical issues as needed.

• Establish menu, pricing, and availability governance across all off-premise channels (third-party delivery marketplaces, first-party web/app, and catering platforms) to protect margins and ensure brand standards.

• Develop, maintain, and socialize off-premise KPI dashboards and insights (sales, margin, fees, average order value, conversion, ratings, cancelations, refunds, and on-time/accuracy).

• Identify and execute test-and-learn opportunities (bundles, upsells, group ordering, menu architecture, and delivery-fee strategy) to grow profitable mix and improve the guest experience.

• Partner with Operations to define off-premise execution standards (prep time, order staging, pickup/delivery handoff, and driver/guest communication) and drive adoption through training and field support.

• Partner with Finance to manage budgets, forecasts, and financial reconciliation for third-party vendor commissions & fees, marketing investments, refunds/chargebacks, and vendor invoices.

• Collaborate with Legal to ensure partner contracts, brand compliance, and risk mitigation (fraud, refunds, and guest data privacy) are managed appropriately.

• Lead cross-functional project teams (Marketing, IT, Analytics, Finance, Operations, and Supply Chain) to launch new menus, promotions, platform enhancements, and operational tools.

• Communicate performance and recommendations to leadership and franchise stakeholders through regular business reviews; influence decisions with clear, data-driven storytelling.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or related field required.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in social media, brand marketing, consumer PR, or content strategy, ideally within consumer-facing brands, sports, media or entertainment.
  • Demonstrated success building organic social growth and cultural relevance, a portfolio of specific moments, campaigns, or brand movements that earned reach rather than paying for it.
  • Direct experience managing community at scale, including crisis response, brand voice development, and fan engagement.
  • Experience developing and executing consumer PR and earned media campaigns that generate measurable press coverage and cultural attention.
  • 3+ years of people management experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Deep, genuine fluency across social media platforms, not just functional knowledge, but a real intuition for what makes content travel on each.
  • Strong creative instincts with the ability to conceive and articulate original ideas that are bold, on-brand, and executable.
  • Cultural intelligence: the ability to read the internet, identify emerging trends, and know when and how a brand can authentically participate.
  • Excellent editorial judgement, including a sharp sense of what NOT to post; brand restraint is as important as brand expression.
  • Proven ability to manage and motivate creative teams; experience working with and directing external creative partners and agencies.
  • Proficiency in social analytics tools ( e.g. Sprout Social, native platform insights) and comfort building performance reports for senior leadership.
  • Strong media relationships and experience pitching stories to food, culture, lifestyle and national press.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to write in a distinct brand voice and adapt that voice across formats and platforms.
  • Comfort operating at speed; this role requires real-time responsiveness to culture and the ability to move quickly without sacrificing quality.

Language Ability:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.  This position demands the ability to craft compelling brand narratives for public audiences and communicate complex social strategies clearly to executive leadership and cross-functional partners.

Reasoning Ability:

The position requires strong creative and strategic judgment.  The successful candidate will be comfortable navigating ambiguity, making real-time decisions and about cultural participation, and balancing long-term brand building with short-term opportunity capture.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position carries direct supervisory responsibility for the Specialist, Social Media.  The Director will be expected to recruit, develop, and retain top creative talent, and to build team capabilities in line with the company's commercial and brand growth objectives.

Travel:

Occasional travel to restaurant locations, agency partners, media events, and brand activations will be required.
