This position is on-site in south Kansas City, MO.

Position Summary

Reporting to the VP of Finance and Administration, the Director of HR plays a vital role in supporting the mission by overseeing all aspects of human resource management, leading the development and execution of human resources strategies that align with Wayside Waifs’ commitment to excellence and compassion. You’ll be at the forefront of policy development, employment practices, and employee engagement, ensuring that the team thrives in a supportive and inclusive environment. Your expertise will guide the leadership team in crafting initiatives that support the organization’s goals and enhance their impact in the community.


  • Recruitment & Hiring: collaboration with the HR Manager to develop strategies to attract diverse talent and oversee the recruitment lifecycle to fill positions efficiently.
  • Relations: address HR inquiries, resolve employee issues, and provide management support on personnel matters.
  • Compensation & Performance Management: implement performance management processes, oversee compensation programs, and provide guidance and support to management and employees on performance-related matters.
  • Training & Development: create and conduct training programs, assess their effectiveness, and stay current with HR trends.
  • Benefits Administration: oversee benefits programs, and open enrollment; share recommended improvements.
  • Labor Law & Recordkeeping: ensure compliance with laws, consult legal counsel as needed, and maintain accurate HR records.
  • HR Strategy & Planning: work with the Executive Team on HR strategies, monitor HR metrics, and support organizational goals.
  • Safety & Workers’ Compensation: oversight & guidance of workers’ compensation claims, promote safety, and report risks.
  • Customer Service: uphold organizational policies, provide exemplary service, and foster a supportive work culture.

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of progressive HR leadership experience; nonprofit or mission-driven organization experience a plus.
  • Human resource certification (e.g., SHRM-CP, PHR) is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of human resource laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Experience executing recruitment and staffing.
  • Initiative and HR knowledge to build out and develop the learning management system.
  • Strategic thinker with excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to handle confidential information with integrity.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite, and an HRIS.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, adapt to changing priorities, and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
