Observability Internship information

What is an observability internship?

An Observability Internship is a temporary, often entry-level position where students or recent graduates learn about and assist with monitoring, measuring, and analyzing the performance and reliability of software systems. Interns work with tools that provide visibility into applications, infrastructure, and services to help teams detect issues and improve system health. The role typically involves tasks such as setting up dashboards, analyzing logs and metrics, and helping to implement best practices for observability. This internship is valuable for those interested in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or software development roles.

What types of projects and tools can I expect to work with during an observability internship?

As an Observability Intern, you'll often contribute to projects focused on monitoring, logging, and tracing the performance of software systems. You may work with popular tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana), or OpenTelemetry to collect and visualize system metrics. Interns typically collaborate closely with site reliability engineers and software developers to identify bottlenecks, improve alerting, and ensure system reliability. This role provides hands-on experience with real-world infrastructure and fosters valuable problem-solving skills in a collaborative, technical environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an observability intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Observability Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge in computer science, familiarity with monitoring concepts, and experience with programming or scripting languages. Exposure to observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack, or cloud monitoring platforms, along with coursework or certifications in DevOps or cloud technologies, is often beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help interns collaborate with engineering teams and interpret complex data. These skills enable interns to contribute to system reliability by identifying, diagnosing, and resolving performance issues efficiently.

What is the difference between Observability Internship vs Monitoring Internship?

AspectObservability InternshipMonitoring Internship
FocusBroad system insights, including logs, metrics, tracesReal-time system health and alerting
SkillsData analysis, debugging, understanding of distributed systemsAlert configuration, basic system metrics
Work EnvironmentDevOps, SRE teams, cloud environmentsOperations, system administration teams
CertificationsKnowledge of monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana), scriptingBasic monitoring tools, scripting skills

While both internships involve system health, an Observability Internship covers a broader set of tools and concepts like logs, traces, and metrics for comprehensive system understanding. Monitoring internships focus more on real-time alerts and system uptime. Understanding these differences helps candidates choose the right role aligned with their skills and career goals.

Senior Lead Software Engineer, Full Stack (Golang, Python, GenAI) (Cloud Operations Resilience Engineering)

If you love building, pioneering in the technology space, and solving complex business problems in a fast-paced, collaborative, and iterative environment, you will thrive at Capital One alongside a dynamic group of makers, breakers, doers, and disruptors. We are seeking a Senior Lead Software Engineer to join our Cloud Operations Resilience Engineering (CORE) Technology division, which is responsible for enabling and evolving Capital Oneโ€™s foundational cloud infrastructure layer, including observability, connectivity, resilience, and availability. In this role, you will drive Capital Oneโ€™s tech evolution by building well-architected solutions that empower our developers to innovate rapidly. Your critical priority will be designing AI-driven systems to automate and scale our governance and oversight, leading the creation of intelligent guardrails that ensure architectural excellence and compliance across all applications, and leveraging machine learning to deliver real-time insights and proactive risk management.

What Youโ€™ll Do:
  • Drive the Enterprise Vision: Shape and advance the technical vision and long-term roadmap for Enterprise Architecture tooling, transforming how application health, compliance, and governance are managed at scale.
  • Establish Intelligent Guardrails: Design and champion enterprise-wide architectural patterns, utilizing automated, AI-driven solutions to enforce real-time governance, risk management, and regulatory compliance across all Capital One applications.
  • Pioneer Modern Paradigms: Infuse industry trends into our ecosystemโ€”such as event-driven architectures, mesh data topologies, and next-gen cloud-native designโ€”ensuring systems are resilient, highly secure, and horizontally scalable.
  • Lead Complex Tech Initiatives: Oversee and de-risk the architectural design, testing, deployment, and optimization of highly critical distributed systems, microservices, and full-stack platforms.
  • Be a Hands-On Catalyst: Maintain deep technical expertise and actively write code, conduct architecture reviews, create proofs-of-concept (PoCs), and rigorously evaluate codebases to validate technical directions.
  • Master the Stack: Leverage a modern, robust tech stack utilizing programming languages like Java, Python, Go, and TypeScript, combined with container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes), open-source RDBMS/NoSQL databases, and advanced AWS cloud services.
  • Partner Cross-Functionally: Collaborate seamlessly with digital product managers, engineering teams, data scientists, and risk/governance partners to build secure fintech solutions that empower millions of customers.
  • Scale Engineering Excellence: Act as a premier technical consultant and mentor across the broader engineering community, elevating technical standards, driving open-source contributions, and dismantling architectural silos.
  • Foster Tech Culture: Share a relentless passion for staying ahead of the tech curve; experiment with emerging technologies (such as LLMs and automated compliance agents) and actively participate in internal and external tech communities.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree
  • At least 6 years of experience in software engineering (Internship experience does not apply)
  • At least 1 year experience with cloud computing (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masterโ€™s Degree
  • 9+ years of experience with Golang and Python
  • 4+ years of experience with AWS, GCP or Microsoft Azure
  • 4+ years of experience in open source frameworks
  • Experience leveraging interactive AI tooling to accelerate productivity, utilizing capabilities beyond basic code completion
