What is an Obgyn laborist?

An Obgyn Laborist is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist who specializes in managing and delivering babies in a hospital setting. Unlike traditional Obgyns who split their time between office visits and deliveries, Laborists focus exclusively on in-hospital care, providing continuous, on-site coverage for labor and delivery units. This approach helps ensure that patients have immediate access to an experienced physician during labor, improves patient safety, and can lead to better outcomes. Laborists also handle emergencies, assist with high-risk pregnancies, and often collaborate with other healthcare professionals to support patient care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Obgyn laborist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Obgyn Laborist, you need board certification in obstetrics and gynecology, advanced knowledge of labor and delivery, and strong clinical decision-making skills. Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems, fetal monitoring technology, and emergency obstetric procedures is typically required. Excellent teamwork, communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies are vital for ensuring the safety of mothers and newborns, providing timely interventions, and collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary hospital teams.

What are some common challenges faced by an Obgyn laborist during a typical shift?

Obgyn Laborists often manage multiple patients simultaneously, making prioritization and quick decision-making essential skills. They frequently encounter high-stress situations such as emergency deliveries or sudden complications, requiring them to remain calm and act efficiently. Collaboration with nurses, anesthesiologists, and pediatricians is key, as is clear communication with patients and their families. Additionally, balancing the unpredictability of labor with documentation and administrative duties can be challenging, but is crucial for patient safety and continuity of care.

Job description

OB/GYN Laborist – Rome Health | Central New York

Nationally Recognized Maternity Care | $250K–$35OK | Dedicated Laborist Model | Predictable Schedule

Rome Health is seeking a Board-Certified/Board-Eligible OB/GYN Laborist to join our growing women's health team and help expand a dedicated laborist model designed around high-quality obstetric care, physician support, and predictable scheduling.

This is an opportunity for an OB/GYN who wants to focus on what they do best-inpatient obstetrics and acute women's health care-without the traditional demands of a full-time office-based practice.

Physicians are drawn to Rome Health for its rare combination of community hospital culture and bold investment in the future of care. As a Laborist at Rome Health, you will play a central role in providing continuous, hospital-based obstetric coverage and supporting patients and colleagues when they need immediate access to an experienced OB/GYN.

The model is designed to offer:

  • Dedicated inpatient obstetric practice
  • Predictable, scheduled shifts and greater control over your time
  • Focus on labor management, deliveries, C-sections, and obstetric emergencies
  • Collaboration with midwives, APPs, nurses, anesthesiology, and community OB/GYN physicians
  • Reduced reliance on traditional office-based responsibilities
  • A physician-supported environment with experienced colleagues
  • A practice model designed to promote work-life balance and long-term physician sustainability
Invested in Exceptional Maternity Care

Over the past five years, Rome Health has transformed its campus to support exceptional health care, including:

  • New state-of-the-art medical center
  • Dedicated C-section suite adjacent to maternity
  • Modern surgical center designed for minimally invasive and robotic procedures
  • National recognition as a Best Hospital for Maternity Care

You'll practice in a collaborative environment where the Laborist serves as an important clinical resource for both patients and the broader women's health team.

Compensation & Benefits
  • $275,000–$350,000 base salary
  • Generous sign-on bonus and relocation assistance
  • Productivity and/or additional shift incentives
  • Loan forgiveness options
  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • Medical malpractice coverage
  • CME support and allowance
  • Predictable, scheduled laborist shifts
  • Visa sponsorship (J-1 and H-1B)
Why a Laborist Model?

If you're looking for an OB/GYN career that gives you the opportunity to practice high-acuity obstetrics while protecting your time away from the hospital, Rome Health's laborist model may be the right fit.

You'll have the opportunity to concentrate on inpatient care, work alongside a supportive multidisciplinary team, and enjoy a schedule designed with physician quality of life in mind.

Why Rome, NY?

Enjoy Adirondack recreation, affordable living, excellent schools, and an easy drive to major Northeast cities. Rome offers the perfect blend of career opportunity, community, and quality of life.

Qualifications
  • MD or DO
  • Board-Certified or Board-Eligible in Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Eligible for New York State medical licensure
  • Strong clinical skills in obstetrics and operative delivery
  • Commitment to high-quality, patient-centered care
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
Let's Talk

Build a career around exceptional obstetric medicine-not the traditional OB/GYN grind.

Join Rome Health as a Laborist and enjoy the opportunity to practice meaningful, high-quality inpatient obstetrics with a predictable schedule, strong physician support, and an organization investing in the future of maternity care.

Come practice OB/GYN differently at Rome Health.
