What is an NVH test engineer?

NVH Test Engineers are professionals who specialize in evaluating and improving the Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) characteristics of vehicles and mechanical systems. They use specialized tools and testing procedures to identify sources of unwanted noise and vibration, and work closely with design and development teams to implement solutions that enhance comfort and product quality. NVH Test Engineers play a crucial role in the automotive and aerospace industries, ensuring that products meet industry standards and customer expectations for quietness and ride comfort.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an NVH test engineer?

To thrive as an NVH Test Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or automotive engineering, with expertise in noise, vibration, and harshness analysis. Familiarity with data acquisition systems, vibration analysis software (such as LMS Test.Lab or Brüel & Kjær), and experience with testing equipment are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting test results and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure accurate NVH assessments, leading to improved product quality and enhanced user experience in automotive or manufacturing environments.

What are common challenges faced by NVH test engineers during vehicle testing, and how are they addressed?

NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) Test Engineers often face challenges such as isolating specific sources of noise or vibration within complex vehicle systems, as well as managing test variables like environmental conditions and driver input. These challenges are typically addressed through meticulous planning of test setups, the use of advanced data acquisition tools, and close collaboration with design and simulation teams to interpret results accurately. Additionally, NVH Test Engineers must often adapt testing procedures to accommodate prototype vehicles or evolving design changes, requiring flexibility and strong problem-solving skills.

What is the difference between Nvh Test Engineer vs Acoustic Test Engineer?

AspectNvh Test EngineerAcoustic Test Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical, Automotive, or Acoustics; relevant certificationsBachelor's in Acoustics, Mechanical Engineering, or related; certifications preferred
Work EnvironmentAutomotive, aerospace, or manufacturing labs focusing on noise and vibration testingAcoustic labs, vehicle testing facilities, or product development environments
Industry UsageUsed in automotive, aerospace, and consumer electronics industries for NVH testingPrimarily in automotive and audio equipment industries for acoustic performance testing

While both roles focus on sound and vibration, the Nvh Test Engineer specializes in noise, vibration, and harshness testing to improve vehicle or product comfort. The Acoustic Test Engineer concentrates on analyzing and optimizing sound quality and acoustic performance. Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications but differ in their specific focus areas within the industry.

Propulsion NVH Technologist

MARTIN Technologies

Dearborn, MI • On-site

Full-time

Posted 19 days ago

Job description

MARTIN Technologies is seeking an experienced Propulsion NVH Technologist with strong hands-on experience in vehicle, exhaust, driveline, and powertrain NVH testing.
This is a senior, hands-on testing role for someone who can independently instrument vehicles and powertrains, operate NVH measurement systems, troubleshoot prototype systems, and work closely with engineers in a fast-paced development environment.
What You'll Do
  • Instrument, set up, and perform Noise, Vibration & Harshness (NVH) testing on vehicles, powertrains, systems, and components.
  • Perform exhaust, driveline, full-vehicle on-road, and fired test chamber measurements.
  • Install and verify accelerometers, microphones, encoders, thermocouples, pressure sensors, and other NVH instrumentation.
  • Operate LMS NVH data acquisition systems and confirm test data is valid for engineering analysis.
  • Perform engine, transmission, driveline, and component changes as required for testing.
  • Conduct testing on-road, at proving grounds, and on laboratory test stands.
  • Operate diagnostic and control tools including ATI, ETAS/INCA, ADAC, CANalyzer, PTDiag, or similar systems.
  • Troubleshoot prototype vehicles, powertrain systems, instrumentation, and test equipment.
  • Interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, coolant-flow diagrams, engineering prints, and test procedures.
  • Maintain accurate test documentation and support department quality requirements.
  • Communicate test status, issues, and results clearly with engineers, requestors, and management.
Required Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2-10 years of automotive testing operations experience.
  • 2-5+ years of direct NVH development/testing experience.
  • Strong knowledge of NVH principles including FFT, order analysis, modal analysis, filtering, windowing, leakage, data acquisition, and analysis.
  • Expert-level automotive mechanical and troubleshooting knowledge.
  • Hands-on experience with NVH sensors, instrumentation, and measurement transducers.
  • Ability to work with multiple technical software systems simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain a Tier 2 driving certification.
Highly Preferred
  • Associate degree in Engineering, Automotive Technology, or related field.
  • Experience with TiVCT, GTDI, HEV, FHEV, PHEV, and Diesel systems.
  • Experience with EEPE, charge accelerometers, thermocouples, pressure transducers, and related instrumentation.
  • Strong prototype vehicle troubleshooting experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while supporting engineering teams.
Important Screening Note
Relevant NVH testing experience is required. Candidates whose experience does not demonstrate a strong match with NVH testing, data acquisition, instrumentation, automotive testing, and troubleshooting may not move forward in the selection process.
