What does a nutrition wellness coach do?

A Nutrition Wellness Coach works with individuals or groups to help them improve their eating habits, lifestyle choices, and overall health. They provide guidance on nutrition, meal planning, and behavior change strategies tailored to each client’s needs and goals. Unlike registered dietitians, Nutrition Wellness Coaches typically focus on holistic wellness and motivation rather than medical nutrition therapy. They may also support clients in developing sustainable habits, managing stress, and achieving long-term wellness.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a nutrition wellness coach?

To thrive as a Nutrition Wellness Coach, you need a solid grounding in nutrition science, health coaching, and behavior change principles, often supported by a degree in nutrition or a related certification such as Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) or Certified Health Coach. Familiarity with dietary analysis software, wellness tracking apps, and client management systems is typically required. Exceptional listening skills, motivational interviewing, and the ability to build rapport are vital soft skills that set top coaches apart. These competencies enable coaches to provide personalized guidance, foster client accountability, and drive lasting wellness outcomes.

How does a nutrition wellness coach collaborate with other health professionals to support clients?

Nutrition Wellness Coaches often work closely with other health professionals such as dietitians, personal trainers, physicians, and mental health counselors. This collaborative approach ensures that clients receive well-rounded support tailored to their unique needs. Coaches may participate in interdisciplinary meetings, share progress updates, and coordinate care plans to help clients achieve their health and wellness goals. Building strong relationships with these professionals not only enhances client outcomes, but also provides valuable learning and networking opportunities for the coach.

What is the difference between Nutrition Wellness Coach vs Nutritionist?

AspectNutrition Wellness CoachNutritionist

Work EnvironmentPrivate coaching, wellness centers, gyms, online platformsHospitals, clinics, private practices, public health settings

Nutritionists often have formal clinical credentials and work in healthcare settings to develop personalized nutrition plans for medical conditions.

How much money can you make as a nutrition wellness coach?

Nutrition wellness coaches typically earn between $30,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, location, and client base. Many work independently or in health clinics, with potential for higher earnings as they build their reputation and clientele.

How to become a nutrition wellness coach?

To become a nutrition wellness coach, individuals typically complete a certification program in nutrition, health coaching, or a related field from an accredited organization. Gaining knowledge of nutrition science, developing strong communication skills, and obtaining relevant certifications such as the National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) can enhance credibility and job prospects.

Is there a demand for nutrition wellness coaches?

The demand for nutrition wellness coaches is growing as more individuals seek personalized health guidance, especially in the wellness and holistic health industries. Opportunities are available in private practice, gyms, corporate wellness programs, and online platforms, often requiring certifications and strong communication skills.

Job description

Nutrition/ Wellness Coach
Company: Medi-Weightloss of Drexel Hill
Position Type: Part-Time with Opportunity for Growth
Compensation: $22-$25 per hour, plus performance-based incentives
About Us
Join our growing team at Medi-Weightloss of Drexel Hill, where we are dedicated to helping patients improve their health through medically supervised weight loss, personalized nutrition guidance, accountability, and ongoing support.
We are looking for a Nutrition Coach and Program Experience Specialist who is passionate about nutrition, enjoys connecting with people, and is confident in their ability to motivate behavior change.
This role is designed around the entire patient journey - from a person's first interest in Medi-Weightloss, through their assessment and decision to begin the program, to ongoing nutrition coaching and support throughout their weight-loss journey.
The right candidate will be warm, engaging, organized, and proactive. They should enjoy learning about people's goals, helping them understand how Medi-Weightloss can support them, building strong relationships, and helping patients stay successful over time.
This position will begin part-time, with meaningful opportunity for additional hours, responsibilities, and professional growth for the right candidate as our practice continues to grow.
Position Overview
The Nutrition Coach and Program Experience Specialist plays an important role throughout the entire patient experience.
You will connect with prospective patients, learn about their weight-loss goals and challenges, and help them understand how Medi-Weightloss may fit their needs. You will conduct program assessments, explain our approach and the value of the program, answer questions, and help interested individuals feel comfortable taking the next step.
Once patients begin the program, you will become an important part of their ongoing success by providing nutrition coaching, accountability, encouragement, and practical strategies for overcoming barriers.
You will also help ensure that patients remain engaged, supported, and satisfied with their experience by identifying challenges early, coordinating with the clinical team, following up when needed, and helping create a smooth and positive experience from beginning to end.
This is an ideal role for someone with a nutrition background who also enjoys people, relationship building, communication, and helping others take action toward improving their health.
Key Responsibilities
  • Respond to prospective patient inquiries, follow up with leads, and help interested individuals schedule a program assessment.
  • Learn about each prospective patient's goals, challenges, motivation, and previous weight-loss experiences.
  • Conduct personalized program assessments that explain how Medi-Weightloss works, the support we provide, and how the program may help them achieve their goals.
  • Answer questions, address concerns, and confidently help prospective patients who are a good fit take the next step toward beginning the program.
  • Maintain organized lead follow-up and reconnect with individuals who may not have been ready to start initially.
  • Provide individualized nutrition coaching focused on eating patterns, meal planning, protein, hydration, healthy choices, and sustainable behavior change.
  • Help patients identify barriers, develop practical strategies, and stay accountable to their goals.
  • Proactively support patients who may be struggling, discouraged, or becoming disengaged.
  • Work closely with the clinical and front-office team to ensure patients have a smooth, positive experience throughout the program.
  • Support referrals, community partnerships, and local outreach efforts that help connect more people who may benefit from Medi-Weightloss with the clinic.
Who We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who is positive, personable, confident, organized, and genuinely enjoys helping people.
The ideal candidate:
  • Has a strong interest or educational background in nutrition, dietetics, health and wellness, health education, public health, or a related nutrition-focused field.
  • Is passionate about nutrition and helping people develop healthier eating habits.
  • Enjoys teaching people about nutrition in a practical, approachable way.
  • Is naturally warm, friendly, energetic, and engaging.
  • Can quickly build rapport and make people feel comfortable.
  • Is a strong listener who can understand someone's goals, concerns, and motivations.
  • Is confident explaining a program or service and helping someone understand its value.
  • Is comfortable following up consistently with prospective patients and encouraging them to take the next step.
  • Can motivate patients while remaining supportive and nonjudgmental.
  • Is comfortable providing accountability and helping patients recognize and work through barriers.
  • Is proactive and takes ownership of follow-up rather than waiting to be reminded.
  • Is organized and able to keep track of multiple patients, leads, and follow-up needs.
  • Works well with providers and other members of a healthcare team.
  • Brings positive energy to the clinic and contributes to a welcoming patient experience.
  • Is looking for a position where they can grow as the practice grows.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Nutritional Sciences, Health & Wellness, Health Education, Public Health, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience in nutrition counseling, nutrition education, health coaching, weight management, wellness, or behavior-change coaching preferred.
  • Experience working directly with patients, clients, or customers is preferred.
  • Experience with lead follow-up, customer service, relationship building, or consultative sales is a plus.
  • Familiarity with health insurance, insurance benefits, or working in a medical practice is a plus, but is not required.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and follow-through skills.
  • Comfortable using technology for scheduling, documentation, patient communication, and lead management.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means creating a positive and consistent experience from the moment someone first contacts Medi-Weightloss through their ongoing success in the program.
Prospective patients should feel that someone listened to their goals, understood their challenges, clearly explained how Medi-Weightloss could help, and made it easy to take the next step.
Current patients should feel supported, encouraged, and accountable. They should have someone who helps them understand nutrition, recognize barriers, problem-solve when they struggle, and stay connected to their goals.
Success also means that:
  • Prospective patient inquiries receive timely and thoughtful follow-up.
  • Interested individuals successfully move from inquiry to assessment.
  • Assessments clearly communicate the value of the Medi-Weightloss program.
  • Patients feel confident and supported when beginning the program.
  • Nutrition coaching is practical, individualized, and focused on sustainable behavior change.
  • Patients remain engaged even when they experience challenges.
  • Barriers are identified early and addressed proactively.
  • Patients have a smooth, positive experience with the clinic and the entire care team.
  • Satisfied patients feel comfortable recommending Medi-Weightloss to others.
  • The clinic continues to build strong relationships and reach more people who can benefit from our services.
Part-Time With Opportunity to Grow
This position will begin as a part-time role, but we are looking for someone who wants to grow with us.
As our patient population and practice continue to expand, the right candidate will have opportunities for additional hours, increased responsibility, greater earning potential, and a larger role in shaping the patient experience and growth of the practice.
If you are passionate about nutrition, enjoy connecting with people, and want to play an important role in helping patients succeed from their first conversation through their ongoing journey, we'd love to meet you.
