Position Overview

Join our team as a Veterinary Assistant who supports the veterinarians and technicians in their daily tasks by cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising and grooming patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and clerical and administrative work. They deliver quality care for all patients and provide exceptional service.
 
Ferguson Animal Hospital in North Providence, Rhode Island, is a busy 6 doctor full service veterinary hospital that has been providing compassionate care to families and their beloved pets for over 85 years.

Key Responsibilities

  • Restrain animals during examinations or vaccinations
  • Handle administrative duties such as answering phone calls, scheduling appointments, or calling patients in the examination room by priority
  • Keep accurate records and logs
  • Advise pet owners on nutrition and healthcare per doctor's instructions

Qualifications (Required)

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older to be considered for this position
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Proven experience as a Veterinary Assistant or similar position working with animals
  • Current or former pet ownership is an advantage
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Patient and caring personality
  • Ability to follow instructions properly
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (e.g., lift up to 50 lbs.)
  • Availability to occasionally work in emergencies

Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)

  • Certificate from a Veterinary Assistant program
  • Experience in basic exam room procedures like restraint, preparing medications and invoicing is preferred
  • The ideal candidate should work well in a fast-paced environment, possess excellent customer service skills, and be a team player

Schedule

  • Hours based on hospital needs but will include at least one evening shift (10 or 11am-7pm) and every other Saturday (8am-2pm)
  • Must be able to commit to every other Saturday. Weekday shifts will vary from either 8am-5pm (with a one-hour break), 8am-2pm, or 10 or 11am-7pm (with a one-hour break) for a closing shift.
