What is nutrition and dietetics?

Nutrition and dietetics is a field focused on the study of food, nutrition, and how they affect human health. Professionals in this area, known as dietitians or nutritionists, provide guidance on healthy eating habits, create dietary plans, and help manage medical conditions through nutrition. They work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, schools, public health organizations, and private practices. The goal is to promote overall wellness and prevent or manage diseases by improving dietary choices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nutrition dietitian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nutrition Dietitian, you need a strong background in food science, human nutrition, and diet planning, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in dietetics or nutrition and required licensure or registration (such as RD or RDN credentials). Familiarity with nutritional analysis software, electronic health records, and menu-planning tools is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to educate and motivate clients are vital soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure that dietitians can develop effective nutrition plans, communicate clearly with clients and healthcare teams, and promote long-term healthy lifestyle changes.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in nutrition and dietetics, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in nutrition and dietetics often encounter challenges such as staying updated with rapidly evolving nutrition science, managing large and diverse client caseloads, and addressing individual dietary needs within institutional constraints (like schools or hospitals). Navigating conflicting dietary preferences, cultural considerations, and resource limitations can also be demanding. These challenges can be addressed through ongoing professional development, strong communication skills, effective time management, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to create practical, evidence-based nutrition plans.

Description

Interactive Government Holdings (IGH) is seeking qualified, trained and capable individuals to serve as a Registered Dietitian for the New Hampshire National Guard Military Readiness Support Services program.

The Registered Dietitian provides medical nutrition therapy, performance nutrition counseling, and group education to New Hampshire National Guard Service Members and eligible Family Members. The position collaborates with military leadership, medical, behavioral health, and readiness staff to develop, implement, and evaluate nutrition and wellness initiatives consistent with current professional standards of practice, applicable military policies, and program requirements.

Position RequirementsMajor responsibilities include (not all inclusive)
  • The Registered Dietitian shall develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive nutritional readiness program designed to help Service Members meet military body composition standards (in accordance with AR 600-9) and improve overall health and performance.
  • Shall provide a multi-tiered approach: delivering targeted, mandatory remedial nutritional counseling to Service Members who fail body composition standards; providing proactive, evidence-based nutritional education to the force; and offering voluntary household nutrition planning to support the overall health of military families.
  • Develop and deliver evidence-based Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) and performance nutrition education. These intervention strategies must be specifically designed to maximize Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) readiness and ensure personnel achieve and maintain strict compliance with military height, weight, and body composition standards.
  • For any Service Member for whom a referral is initiated within the contractor's software by the Service Member or an authorized Government representative for failing to meet body composition standards under AR 600-9, the Contractor's Registered Dietitian shall conduct an initial nutritional intake assessment within seven (7) business days. Following the intake, the contractor shall develop a tailored, written Body Composition "Get-Well" Plan within ten (10) business days after referral, actively manage the case through continuous nutritional counseling, and formally close the case only upon receiving official notification that the Service Member is in full compliance with standards.
  • Upon request from an eligible beneficiary (to include Service Members, immediate family members, or eligible federal employees), the Contractor's Registered Dietitian shall conduct a nutritional needs assessment.
  • Within ten (10) business days of the assessment, the dietitian shall develop a tailored Voluntary Household Nutrition Plan and upload it to the treatment notes system. This plan shall focus on practical skills that support a healthy household, including, but not limited to, collaborative meal planning, grocery shopping on a budget, promoting nutritious eating habits for children, and general wellness-focused dietary guidance for the entire household.
  • To support the program's broader outreach strategy, the Registered Dietitian shall develop and provide one piece of subject matter expert (SME) content to the Contract Manager on a weekly basis. This content shall be suitable for a general military audience and may include topics such as performance fueling strategies, healthy recipes, or guidance related to the Army Body Composition Program. All content generations shall be synchronized with normally released Army publications.
  • Work in collaboration with the Exercise Specialist to combine expertise to create a holistic and interactive online environment that drives participation and positive results.
  • In partnership with the Exercise Specialist jointly use a contractor developed decentralized virtual coaching platform to provide continuous, remote coaching. Deliver combined minimum of two (2) virtual fitness and two (2) virtual nutrition coaching sessions per month.
Skills / Certifications
  • Must be a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). The Contractor must be currently credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and hold active, unrestricted state licensure. Preference shall be given to candidates possessing the Board-Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) credential.
  • Must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of Army Regulation (AR) 600-9 (The Army Body Composition Program) and Army Field Manual (FM) 7-22 (Holistic Health and Fitness).
Qualifications
  • Experience working with military, Guard/Reserve, veterans, or law enforcement populations.
  • Experience in sports/performance nutrition, weight management, or chronic disease management.
  • Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) or other relevant specialty credentials.
  • Familiarity with DoD or National Guard health promotion programs, readiness standards, and body composition/fitness policies.
  • Experience within a federal contractor environment or in government-funded health programs.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish or other language(s) commonly used within the New Hampshire Guard community (if truly preferred and not mandatory; be careful to distinguish "required" vs. "preferred" to avoid disparate impact concerns).
