Job description

Position Summary

In accordance with the American Nurses Association’s Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice, the registered nurse, under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager and Nursing Director, is primarily responsible for professional performance and direct patient care. The role encompasses nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and their families across the health care continuum. The registered nurse is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient care outcomes using the model of care designed by the nursing department and in accordance with established agency policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines and standards of practice.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties
  • Standards of Care
    1. Consistently and effectively utilizes all steps of the nursing process in the provision of timely, safe, efficient, and appropriate patient/centered care.
    2. Assesses the patient and family in a systematic and ongoing manner for both overt and covert signs and symptoms in accordance with the standards of clinical nursing practice.
    3. Collects pertinent data using appropriate assessment techniques.
    4. Prioritizes data according to the patient’s immediate condition or needs.
    5. Involves the patient, family/significant others and appropriate health care providers in the collection of data when appropriate.
    6. Communicates clearly, concisely, and effectively, in written and oral form, and documents relevant patient care data in compliance with departmental policies.
    7. Identifies emergency or crisis situations, communicates such in a timely manner to the appropriate health care team, and responds appropriately when needed.
    8. Analyzes assessment data to determine appropriate nursing diagnoses, demonstrating critical thinking skills and documentation.
    9. Identifies expected outcomes individualized to the patient, writes realistic and measurable clinical and educational goals, and formulates outcomes with the patient, significant others and the health care team.
    10. Develops a plan of care that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes, ensuring the plan reflects current nursing practice standards, policies, and guidelines.
    11. Implements interventions, prioritizes patient care interventions, delegates appropriately, and ensures tasks are completed timely.
    12. Provides a safe, clean unit environment through appropriate risk management practices.
    13. Demonstrates safe technical competence in direct care skills, such as phlebotomy, IV insertion, informatics, and equipment monitoring.
    14. Administers medications and other treatments in accordance with established standards, policies, and protocols.
    15. Educates patients and families regarding illness, procedures, treatments, and health maintenance.
    16. In emergencies, demonstrates effective decision making and coordinates responses with other team members.
    17. Documents interventions and evaluations in accordance with departmental policy.
    18. Evaluates patient progress toward outcomes, conducts ongoing reassessments, and incorporates assessment data into revisions of diagnoses and plans of care.
    19. Provides follow‑up care in person via home visits and via telephone when appropriate.
  • Standards of Professional Performance
    1. Systematically evaluates the quality, cost, and effectiveness of nursing practice and participates in quality improvement activities.
    2. Actively seeks opportunities to improve practice and participates in cost containment initiatives.
    3. Adheres to professional standards, statutes, and regulations across all practice areas.
    4. Operates with appropriate autonomy for experience and education level, completing tasks to the end and informing staff of outcomes.
    5. Seeks constructive feedback to improve daily practice and resolves peer conflicts effectively.
    6. Maintains accurate professional development records and demonstrates flexibility in staffing needs.
    7. Maintains a presentable appearance in accordance with the dress code and identification badge requirements.
    8. Acquires and maintains current knowledge in nursing practice through ongoing education and participation in in‑service activities.
    9. Engages in unit or departmental task forces, councils, or committees and shares knowledge with colleagues and new staff.
    10. Makes ethical decisions that preserve patient autonomy, dignity, confidentiality, and rights.
    11. Acts as a patient advocate, delivers care nondiscriminatory and respectfully, and seeks resources for ethical decisions.
    12. Collaborates with clients, significant others, and the health care team, communicating and coordinating care and referrals.
    13. Coordinates discharge activities, including arranging for home or agency referrals when necessary.
    14. Performs additional duties such as interpreting for patients, acting as a shift charge nurse when requested, and other related duties as assigned.
  • Patient Assessment and Triage
    • Answers patient phone calls, portal messages, and referrals.
    • Assesses symptoms and determines the level of urgency.
    • Documents all patient interactions in the medical record.
    • Post‑operative triage: assesses patients after ENT procedures, escalates concerns to the surgeon or advanced practice provider, and provides post‑operative education.
  • Clinical Advice and Patient Education
    • Educates patients regarding medications, post‑procedure expectations, and red‑flag symptoms that require immediate medical attention.
  • Test Results Management
    • Manages medication refill requests and reviews medication questions and side effects.
  • Administrative and Quality Responsibilities
    • Manages patient message pools and in‑baskets, ensuring timely response to patient concerns.
    • Tracks urgent referrals and pending issues.
    • Participates in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
Job Requirements

The candidate must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an Associate’s degree or a Baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN). The BSN is preferred. Candidates without a BSN must enroll in a Baccalaureate program within one year of hire and complete the BSN by the end of the semester in which the four‑year anniversary of employment at BMC occurs.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required
  • Current RN licensure in the state of Massachusetts in good standing.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Some units may require Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Additional certifications may be required for certain practice areas.
Compensation Range

$38.05 – $79.47 per hour. This range reflects the minimum job qualifications; total compensation also includes benefits such as medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, flexible spending accounts, 403(b) savings match, earned time cash out, paid time off, career advancement opportunities, and resources to support employee and family wellbeing.
