The Director of Nursing is responsible for the overall strategic planning for all clinical programs to ensure implementation of the mission, philosophy, patient care standards and nursing informatics to support quality nursing practice. Education Requirements

Bachelor of Science with a major in nursing and Masters degree in nursing or health related specialty required; doctorate preferred.

Experience Requirements

7+ years minimum demonstrated clinical and administrative expertise in area of nursing practice assigned.

Licensing and Certification Requirements (if applicable)

Licensed as a registered nurse with current registration in New York State.

Professional Board Certification in leadership and/or clinical specialty strongly preferred.

Compensation Statement

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $166,400.00 - $239,200.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. The MPD develops and implements organizational strategies and infrastructure to support clinical quality, operational effectiveness and shared governance as essential components of the MRP. 

  2. Provides education and consultation to internal and external constituents regarding the MRP. Under the direction of the CNO, and in collaboration with the VPs of Nursing Clinical Operations, the DONs and Interdisciplinary teams, coordinates the ANCC Magnet application, designation and re-designation process. 

  3. Ensures that data is disseminated throughout the nursing organization, and assists nursing staff to interpret and use data to improve care or resolve identified problems 

  4. Serve as the MPD coordinating the committee structure and collaborating on the processes necessary for the ongoing preparation of MRP reporting and documentation requirements.

  5. Collaborate with the Directors Professional Practice, Professional Development/Education, Quality, Center for Nursing Research and Innovation and the Clinical Directors to create, plan, coordinate and enculturate the Department of Nursing efforts in patient safety, quality and performance improvement, and aligned with the MRP.

  6. Provides education and consultation to internal and external constituents regarding ANCC MRP management activities and outcomes.

  7. Ensures that data is disseminated throughout the nursing organization, and assists nursing and staff to interpret and use data to meet and exceed the ANCC MRP requirements.

  8. Cultivate productive working relationship across all hospital departments. 

  9. Develops and implements the use of an institutional set of nursing sensitive outcome indicators aligned with the ANCC MRP to monitor and improve care

  10. Coordinates the data to support the Model Components of the ANCC MRP

  11. Ensures outcomes are progressing to the level of Magnet recognition.

  12. Contribute to the Nursing Strategic Plan related to retaining MRP designation

Clinical Leadership 

  1. In collaboration with Nursing, Medical and Quality Leadership, coordinates clinical intervention compliance activities and manages quality metrics related to the patient experience, nursing care delivery, regulatory agency mandates and the MRP.

  2. Applies Quality/Process Improvement methodology such as Lean, Six Sigma and SBAR.

  3. Evaluates the impact of changes in clinical practice and supports innovation to improve care delivery and resources in the environment of practice.

  4. Acts as a resource to nursing staff related to the ANCC MRP as an approach to meet the needs of patient-family focused care in inpatient and outpatient areas. 

  5. Serves as chair of the MRP Committee. Ensures outcomes are progressing to the level of MRP recognition. 

  6. Supports a structure that ensures outcomes consistent with the MRP Re-designation Process. 

  7. Provides coordination and leadership in the execution of day to day program activities, as appropriate to program objectives and areas of expertise. 

  8. Provides technical assistance, resource services, consultation and education to clinical departments relative to the MRP.

  9. Serves as a resource for patients and their families. 

  10. Acts as a patient advocate utilizing the Patient Bill of Rights. 

  11. Participates in promoting and maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment

  1. Supports the mission, philosophy, goals and objectives of the Department of Nursing and The Mount Sinai Health System.

Administrative Practice 

  1. Prepares reports and analysis associated with the Department of Nursing Quality and the MRP i.e. senior management reports, departmental and clinical service program evaluation, quarterly reports, etc. 

  2. Oversees and coordinates all data entry for accurate reports. 

  3. Facilitates collaboration within the program between all departments, services and units. Demonstrates knowledge of hospital, departmental and care center standards, policies, procedures and guidelines as well as regulatory agency standards. Assures readiness for ANCC MRP Re-designation.

  4. Participates in the development and implementation of continuous improvement programs to meet all ANCC MRP requirements. 

  5. Is aware of and responsive to budgetary constraints and incorporates financial principles into program development and allocation of resources. 

  6. Assists in the performance appraisal process of designated Nursing staff. 

  7. Researches opportunities for use in benchmarking for assigned areas.

Patient Experience

1. Leads nursing practice using the tenets of the Professional Practice Model of Relationship Centered Care and the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing for the promotion of the patient experience.

2. Demonstrates proficiency in all aspects of Purposeful Hourly Rounding (PHR) and role models expected behaviors.

3. Ensures the integration of PHR into clinical activities to enhance Relationship Centered Care.

4. Confirms that staff members round hourly on all patients by review of rounding validation data and observation of unit rounding.

5. Validates Associate Director/Clinical Nurse Manager competency in PHR and provides consistent meaningful feedback with more focused feedback as needed.

6. Synthesizes quantitative and qualitative feedback regarding the patient experience and staff engagement to Associate Directors, Clinical Nurse Managers, staff and the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team that leads to the development and implementation of an action plan.

7. Follows up on all patient concerns in a timely manner, provides service recovery as needed and escalates patient concerns as appropriate.

8. Demonstrates caring, respect, compassion, empathy and active listening through dialogue, body language and actions.

Quality and Safety

1. Designs, supports and leads a safe, therapeutic and efficient patient-centered care environment for professional practice.

2. Identifies and investigates issues or variances in practice/operations by participating in the RCA process and develops and implements corrective action plans.

3. Fosters a fair and open culture that encourages error and near-miss occurrence reporting.

4. Leads interdisciplinary quality improvement teams using the principles of high reliability.
