How you make a difference
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides a full range of psychiatric services to incarcerated patients in accordance with state scope of practice, collaborative protocols, and established policies. This role delivers direct psychiatric care while also providing clinical consultation to mental health and healthcare staff. The position works within state guidelines to support consistent, high-quality psychiatric services across the facility. Clinical consultation and supervision are sought as required under applicable collaborative practice requirements.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide psychiatric evaluations, treatment, and follow-up care while exercising independent medical judgment.
  • Monitor and manage psychotropic medications, including effectiveness, side effects, and required follow-up.
  • Collaborate with mental health, medical, and administrative teams to ensure consistent psychiatric and mental health services.
  • Complete timely, accurate clinical documentation and participate in required meetings, consultations, and on-call coverage.
  • Support crisis intervention, referrals, transfers, and emergency or involuntary treatment processes as allowed by scope of practice.

Qualifications & Requirements
Education
  • Master in Science of Nursing or Post-Master's Certificate from an accredited nurse practitioner program with a specialty in psychiatric mental health across the lifespan.

Experience
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience as a PMHNP required, or may be waived if approved by Vice President of Advanced Practice Program.
  • Corrections experience in a PMHNP role preferred.

Licenses/Certifications
  • Unrestricted current license to practice as a PMHNP in the state of practice.
  • Current board certification as a PMHNP.
  • Current DEA Registration (unless Chief Psychiatric Officer determines it as optional).
  • Current BLS certification.
