What is a Numerical Modeling job?

A Numerical Modeling job involves developing and using mathematical models to simulate real-world physical, biological, or engineering systems. Professionals in this field use computational techniques to analyze complex problems, predict behaviors, and optimize designs. They often work with software tools like MATLAB, Python, or specialized simulation programs and apply knowledge from physics, mathematics, and engineering. Numerical modelers are employed in various industries, including aerospace, climate science, finance, and healthcare.

What are the typical daily tasks for someone working in Numerical Modeling?

Professionals in Numerical Modeling typically spend their days designing and implementing computational models, running simulations, and analyzing data to solve real-world engineering or scientific problems. They often collaborate with other engineers, scientists, or project managers to ensure that models accurately represent complex systems and align with project objectives. Tasks may also include validating models against experimental data, troubleshooting numerical issues, and preparing technical reports or presentations. This role requires a mix of independent research, teamwork, and continuous communication to deliver effective solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Numerical Modeling position, and why are they important?

To excel in Numerical Modeling, a deep understanding of mathematics, physics, and computational methods, often supported by a degree in engineering or science, is essential. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C++, as well as experience with simulation software and numerical analysis tools, is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to clearly communicate complex concepts are valuable soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure accurate model development and collaboration within interdisciplinary teams, driving successful real-world solutions.

Description
Purpose of the Position:

As a Process Modeling Engineer, Scientist/Engineer, you will model new processes and/or process conditions to improve product attributes and reduce costs for glass and/or ceramic substrates and filters. You will develop modeling and analytical tools, and you will also leverage existing tools, to build a fundamental understanding of underlying principles. This role requires a strong foundation in solid mechanics and deep expertise in numerical modeling, along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with globally distributed researchers, engineers in our commercial organizations, and customers.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
โ€ข Model new processes and process conditions to improve product performance and reduce costs for glass and/or ceramic substrates and filters.
โ€ข Develop and apply analytical and numerical models (e.g., solid mechanicsโ€“based simulations) to build a fundamental understanding of process and material behavior.
โ€ข Communicate results clearly and collaborate effectively with a globally distributed team of researchers and engineers, as well as commercial partners and customers.
Job Duties:
โ€ข Use solid mechanics (analytical methods and FEA/BEM) to predict and mitigate thermo-mechanical stress, deformation/warpage, and residual stress in glass/ceramic components.
โ€ข Build transient thermalโ€“stress models of process cycles (heating/cooling) to quantify stress evolution and identify robust process windows.
โ€ข Simulate contact, fixturing, and handling to reduce local overstress, damage risk, and dimensional variability.
โ€ข Evaluate thin film/coating stresses and interfacial delamination risk to inform layer design and processing conditions.
โ€ข Provide mentorship and recommendations on new capabilities and method development related to mechanical testing and measurements.
โ€ข Engage with the businesses, as needed, to address customer questions and support product engineering problem-solving.
โ€ข Write technical reports, invention disclosures, and publications.
Required Years and Area of Experience:
โ€ข M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline with 4+ years of experience in a similar field OR Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline with 0+ years of experience
