What is a Numerical Control Programmer job?

A Numerical Control (NC) Programmer creates and optimizes machine tool programs using computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software to automate machining processes. They interpret blueprints, define tool paths, and write G-code instructions for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. Their role ensures precision and efficiency in manufacturing components by selecting the right tools, materials, and cutting parameters. NC Programmers work closely with engineers and machinists to troubleshoot problems and improve production quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Numerical Control Programmer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Numerical Control Programmer, you need strong skills in mathematics, blueprint reading, and an in-depth understanding of CNC machine operations, often backed by a degree or technical certification in manufacturing or engineering. Proficiency with CAD/CAM software, G-code programming, and familiarity with CNC controllers such as Fanuc or Siemens is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and clear communication with machinists and engineers are valuable soft skills for this role. These strengths ensure precise programming, minimize production errors, and support smooth collaboration in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

What are some typical daily responsibilities of a Numerical Control Programmer?

Numerical Control Programmers spend their days creating, testing, and refining CNC programs to guide machining operations for parts production. This often involves interpreting engineering drawings, selecting proper tools, writing or modifying code, and troubleshooting issues on the shop floor in close collaboration with machinists and engineers. Programmers also verify finished components meet specifications by analyzing measurements and adjusting programs as needed. Successful CNC Programmers regularly balance hands-on problem-solving with detailed computer-based work to ensure product quality and production efficiency.

Auburn, WA | Shape the Future of Aerospace Manufacturing

Drive precision. Solve complex machining challenges. See your work take flight.

PDS Tech Commercial is seeking a Numerical Control Programmer (NCP) to support a leading aerospace innovator in Auburn, WA. In this high impact role, you’ll develop multi axis machining programs for complex structural components used in commercial aircraft—directly influencing producibility, quality, and shop floor efficiency. This is an excellent opportunity for programmers who thrive in a hands on, problem solving environment where advanced manufacturing meets cutting edge aerospace engineering.

Position Overview

Job Title: Numerical Control Programmer
Type: Full-Time Consultant (6 Months)
Location: Auburn, WA 98001
Schedule: Monday–Friday | 6:30 AM–3:00 PM
Pay Rate: $53.00 - $62.00/ per hour
Attendance: Regular, predictable attendance required

As part of the Machining/Tooling team, you’ll translate engineering intent into high-quality, executable 5-axis CNC programs. You’ll collaborate across engineering, planning, tooling, and the shop floor to deliver efficient machining strategies and flawless execution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create, verify, and revise Machine Control Data (MCD), tooling geometry, and setup documentation for multi axis (primarily 5 axis) CNC machines.

  • Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and manufacturing requirements to develop robust machining programs for aluminum and hard metal components.

  • Develop multi setup machining strategies and select tooling, fixturing, and machines that ensure accuracy and producibility.

  • Produce clear, operator ready setup sheets and instructions to support safe, consistent machining.

  • Utilize simulation tools such as Vericut to validate toolpaths and eliminate collision or gouge risks.

  • Troubleshoot and refine NC programs based on inspections, feedback, and first article results.

  • Collaborate with planning, engineering, tooling, and machine operators to improve cycle times, reduce scrap, and resolve manufacturability concerns.

  • Level 4: Lead custom fixture design, complex tooling arrangements, and machining strategy for multi operation workflows.

  • Maintain documentation, revision control, and compliance with configuration management requirements.

  • Work under general direction in a high performance production environment.

Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of NC programming experience or equivalent education/experience.

  • Demonstrated experience with 5-axis CNC machining for aerospace components.

  • Proficiency with CATIA V5 NC programming.

  • Skilled with NC simulation tools such as Vericut.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and manufacturing documentation.

  • Ability to create clear setup documentation and operator instructions.

  • Eligible to work under the terms of the contract engagement.

  • Willingness and ability to work the assigned shift.

  • This position requires use of information or access to facilities subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or Export Administration Regulations (EAR). These regulations may limit access of controlled technologies: 1) to U.S. Persons, including U.S. Citizens, lawful permanent residents, and other narrow categories including refugees and asylees, or 2) to certain foreign nationals that have received an export license.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing custom fixtures and tooling for multi setup machining.

  • Experience defining machining strategy or selecting optimal machines/processes.

  • Familiarity with aerospace manufacturing, inspection processes, and first article requirements.

  • Proven problem solving record—cycle time reduction or workflow optimization.

  • Strong communication skills with cross functional collaboration experience.

  • Exposure to additional CAM systems or aerospace standard post processors.

Education / Experience

Education and experience typically acquired through:

  • Associate degree plus 3 or more years of related experience, or

  • Bachelor's degree plus 1 or more years of related experience, or

  • 5+ years of directly related work experience in lieu of formal education.

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
