How much do nuclear refueling jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 23, 2026, the average hourly pay for nuclear refueling in the United States is $51.91, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $39.18 and $62.50 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What challenges might I encounter as part of a nuclear refueling team?

Working in nuclear refueling involves adhering to strict safety procedures, managing time-critical operations, and maintaining concentration during long, often repetitive shifts. You may face physically demanding tasks, work in confined spaces or highly regulated environments, and need to coordinate closely with other technicians, engineers, and safety personnel. Because refueling outages are scheduled and can require extended shifts, flexibility and a strong commitment to safety are essential. Overcoming these challenges is a vital part of ensuring the continued safe operation of the nuclear facility.

What is a Nuclear Refueling job?

A Nuclear Refueling job involves the maintenance, replacement, and inspection of nuclear fuel in reactors, typically during scheduled outages. Workers in this role ensure the safe handling and positioning of fuel assemblies while following strict safety protocols. It requires a strong understanding of reactor operations, mechanical systems, and radiation safety. This job is commonly found in nuclear power plants, naval vessels, and research reactors.

How to become a nuclear fuel handler?

To become a nuclear fuel handler, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by specialized training in nuclear safety and handling procedures. Relevant certifications, such as radiation safety training and sometimes a security clearance, are often required, along with physical fitness and the ability to work in controlled environments. On-the-job training is common, and experience in industrial or technical roles can be beneficial.

What jobs make around $100,000 a year?

In nuclear refueling, senior reactor operators, nuclear engineers, and plant managers often earn around $100,000 or more annually. These roles typically require specialized training, certifications, and experience working in nuclear power plants or related facilities.

How much does a nuclear refueler make?

A nuclear refueler, typically a nuclear power plant technician or specialist involved in refueling operations, earns an average salary ranging from $70,000 to $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and certifications. These roles often require specialized training, safety certifications, and adherence to strict safety protocols in a highly regulated environment.

Is it hard to become a nuclear technician?

Becoming a nuclear technician requires completing an associate degree in nuclear technology or a related field, along with on-the-job training and certification. The role demands strong technical skills, attention to safety protocols, and the ability to work in a highly regulated environment, making it a challenging but achievable career path for those with the right education and training.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Nuclear Refueling position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Nuclear Refueling, you need a solid understanding of nuclear physics principles, mechanical systems, and rigorous safety protocols, often supported by a technical degree and industry certifications. Familiarity with radiation monitoring devices, robotic fueling equipment, and compliance with NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) regulations is vital. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong problem-solving skills help individuals excel in this demanding environment. These skills ensure safe, efficient refueling operations and adherence to strict safety and quality standards in nuclear power plants.

Job description

About Radiant

Radiant is an El Segundo, CA-based startup building the worldโ€™s first mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors. The companyโ€™s first reactor, Kaleidos, is a 1-megawatt, fail-safe microreactor that can be transported anywhere power is needed and run for up to 5 years without refueling. Portable nuclear power with rapid-deploy capability can replace similar-sized diesel generators and provide critical asset support for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases. Radiantโ€™s unique, practical approach to nuclear development leverages modern software engineering to rapidly deliver safe, factory-built microreactors that use existing, well-qualified materials. Founded in 2020, Radiant is on track to test its first reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory this summer, with initial customer deliveries beginning in 2028.

About the Role

Radiant is seeking a highly motivated Nuclear Engineer responsible for developing nuclear engineering solutions for our Kaleidos microreactor. This may include nuclear engineering areas such as radiation shielding, criticality safety, accident dose consequence, reactor physics modeling and design, transient analysis, and radiation detection. You will lead and own nuclear engineering initiatives and studies, strategic direction, and work closely with a collaborative nuclear and engineering team in a fast-paced startup environment. The ideal candidate is passionate about advanced reactor design, detail-oriented, effectively communicates, and a tenacity to solve interesting technical challenges.
