Operate a chemical decontamination plant system at the TMI-2 facility.
Perform equipment inspections, system startups, shutdowns, and monitor plant parameters during operations.
Record operating data, complete logs, and support system commissioning, testing, and maintenance activities.
Job description
Job Description/Tasks/Responsibilities
The Chemical Decontamination Technician works with a team in a highly controlled industrial and nuclear environment to use chemical processes in order to decontaminate radiologically contaminated components onsite at Three Mile Island. Strict compliance with approved procedures, work instructions, permits, and safety controls is an essential function of the position. The technician reports to the chemical decontamination manager and is expected to stop work and seek direction whenever actual conditions differ from approved instructions or expected plant conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a chemical decontamination plant system located at the TMI-2 facility.
- Adhere to operational procedures, safety protocols, and performance metrics during operation of the chemical decontamination system.
- Drive operational improvements to improve system operations and increase throughput.
- Understand and use Stop Work Authority and make notifications when plant conditions differ from procedures, expected operating parameters, or established safety limits.
- Perform equipment lineups, pre-operational inspections, system startups, normal operations, shutdowns, and post-operation activities as trained and authorized.
- Monitor plant equipment and process parameters, including tank levels, temperatures, pressures, flow rates, chemical concentrations, ventilation status, alarms, and instrumentation readings.
- Record operating data, complete logs and checklists, and maintain clear, accurate, and timely records of plant activities.
- Perform chemical receipt, transfer, mixing, sampling, neutralization, filtration, rinsing, and waste-handling activities as authorized by procedure.
- Inspect pumps, valves, tanks, piping, hoses, filters, instrumentation, ventilation equipment, and other plant components for abnormal conditions, leakage, degradation, or improper operation.
- Support system commissioning, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and equipment modifications under the direction of operations, engineering, or maintenance personnel.
- Participate in pre-job briefings, shift turnovers, post-job reviews, safety meetings, and operational readiness activities.
- Use required chemical, industrial, and radiological personal protective equipment and comply with contamination-control, hazardous-material, lockout/tagout, and site safety requirements.
- Maintain cleanliness, proper material storage, equipment readiness, and inventory of operating supplies and consumables.
- Provide field observations and operating experience to support procedure improvements, corrective actions, and process improvements.
- Coordinate effectively with operations, maintenance, engineering, radiation protection, industrial safety, quality assurance, and project personnel.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate degree, technical diploma, military technical training, apprenticeship, or equivalent industrial training preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to follow detailed written procedures, work instructions, permits, and safety requirements without unauthorized deviation.
- Strong commitment to procedural compliance, questioning attitude, stop-work responsibility, and conservative decision-making.
- Basic understanding of industrial process equipment, including pumps, valves, tanks, piping, filters, heat-transfer equipment, ventilation systems, and process instrumentation.
- Ability to read and interpret operating procedures, equipment identification, system diagrams, basic P&IDs, safety data sheets, and equipment manuals.
- Ability to monitor process conditions, recognize abnormal equipment or system behavior, and promptly communicate concerns.
- Experience handling industrial chemicals or hazardous materials using appropriate PPE and engineered controls.
- Ability to perform basic calculations, record operating data accurately, and use computerized work-management or data-entry systems.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a disciplined operations team and accept direction from supervisors and technical personnel.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Nuclear, radiological, chemical-processing, or similar process-plant experience preferred.
- Ability to complete required site, radiation-worker, respirator, hazardous-material, equipment-operation, and plant qualification training.
- HAZWOPER 24 or 40 preferred.
- Track record of high contribution to effective teams.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Work is primarily performed onsite in an industrial chemical-processing and nuclear decommissioning facility.
- Work will be performed in radiologically controlled, contamination-controlled, chemical-control, and other restricted-access areas.
- The position involves work near operating pumps, tanks, piping systems, process equipment, ventilation systems, instrumentation, and material-handling equipment.
- Work conditions may include elevated noise levels, temperature variations, humidity, wet or uneven surfaces, chemical odors, and limited workspaces.
- Required PPE may include standard industrial safety equipment, chemical-resistant protective equipment, radiological protective clothing, hearing protection, dosimetry, and respiratory protection.
- The normal schedule is expected to be Monday through Thursday on a 4-10 schedule; however, shift work, overtime, weekends, holidays, or extended hours may be required to support plant operations.
- Limited travel may be required for training, equipment support, or related project activities.
- Strong communication skills
- Proficient in Microsoft office
- intermediate knowledge of industry codes and regulations
Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions

- Ability to use hands to accomplish tasks as assigned
- Ability to effectively communicate; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
- Ability to see close and distance and basic colors/shades
- Ability to work alone, interact with the public, and perform under deadline pressure
- Ability to work outdoor and indoor activities under various conditions
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of one year of experience in industrial plant operations, chemical processing, equipment operations, maintenance, decontamination, waste treatment, power generation, manufacturing, or a comparable procedure-driven and heavily regulated environment.
- Associate degree, technical certification, military technical training, or equivalent industrial training preferred.
- Three or more years of experience in chemical-processing, nuclear, radiological, decontamination, waste-treatment, or other hazardous industrial operations.
- Experience operating pumps, tanks, piping systems, filtration equipment, ventilation equipment, and process instrumentation.
- Experience with chemical transfer, solution preparation, process sampling, neutralization, or liquid-waste handling.
- Experience supporting system startup, commissioning, testing, or operational-readiness activities.
- Previous qualification under formal operating procedures, conduct-of-operations standards, or equivalent disciplined work controls.
- Current or prior radiation-worker, respirator, HAZWOPER, rigging, lockout/tagout, or hazardous-material training, as applicable.
