What are Nova in the context of astronomy?

A nova is a sudden, dramatic increase in brightness of a star, caused by a thermonuclear explosion on the surface of a white dwarf in a binary star system. This explosion occurs when the white dwarf accretes enough hydrogen-rich material from its companion star, igniting a runaway fusion reaction. Novae are distinct from supernovae, which involve the complete destruction of a star, while novae only result in a temporary brightening. After a nova event, the star typically returns to its previous state and the process can sometimes repeat. Observing novae helps astronomers better understand stellar evolution and binary star systems.
