RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kforce has a client that is seeking a Database Administrator in Houston, TX.
About the Client:
Our client is a long-established U.S.-based insurance and annuity organization headquartered in Houston, TX, with multiple office locations nationwide. The client offers employee benefits starting day one and supports professional development opportunities.
Scope & Purpose:
Our client is seeking an experienced Database Administrator (DBA) to support mission-critical health and life insurance systems. This role is responsible for the reliability, performance, security, and compliance of relational and NoSQL database platforms, with a strong emphasis on SQL Server, DB2, and MongoDB. The ideal candidate has experience operating in regulated environments and supporting high-availability, data-driven applications.
Responsibilities:
* Administer, monitor, and maintain SQL Server, DB2, and MongoDB databases across development, test, and production environments
* Design and support high availability and disaster recovery solutions (Always On, replication, clustering, backups, restores)
* Perform database performance tuning and optimization, including indexing strategies and query analysis
* Implement and enforce data security controls, encryption, access management, and auditing aligned with HIPAA and insurance regulatory standards
* Perform database backup/restores as needed
* Support application teams with database design, schema changes, data modeling, and release deployments
* Automate routine DBA tasks using scripting (PowerShell, Bash, Python, or similar)
* Monitor database health, capacity, and growth; proactively identify risks and performance issues
* Participate in incident response, root-cause analysis, and production support rotations
* Maintain documentation for database standards, procedures, and architecture
* Configure data replication via mirroring and CDC technologies
* Collaborate with infrastructure, cloud, security, and application teams
REQUIREMENTS:
* Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (preferred)
* 5+ years of hands-on DBA experience
Strong expertise in:
* Microsoft SQL Server (administration, HA/DR, performance tuning)
* DB2
* MongoDB (replica sets, sharding, performance monitoring)
* Experience supporting enterprise, high-volume transactional systems
* Strong SQL skills and understanding of data modeling principles
* Experience with backup/recovery strategies and business continuity planning
* Familiarity with Windows, iSeries, and Linux server environments
* Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
* Experience with database encryption at rest
Preferred Experience:
* Azure certification
* Certifications (Microsoft, MongoDB, or cloud platforms)
* Experience in health and life insurance, financial services, or other regulated industries
* Knowledge of HIPAA, data privacy, and audit requirements
* Cloud database experience (Azure SQL/Fabric, Atlas, or equivalent)
* Experience with CI/CD pipelines and database deployment automation
The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors like relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.
We offer comprehensive benefits including medical/dental/vision insurance, HSA, FSA, 401(k), and life, disability & ADD insurance to eligible employees. Salaried personnel receive paid time off. Hourly employees are not eligible for paid time off unless required by law. Hourly employees on a Service Contract Act project are eligible for paid sick leave.
