JOB TITLE: Utility Company Locating Technician

LOCATIONS: Staten Island NY

DEPARTMENT: Operations

REPORTS TO: Eastern NY Regional Manager

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

CLASSIFICATION/STATUS: Full-Time

WORK HOURS: Monday thru Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30pm/possible Saturday (OT is a Minimum)

Position Summary:

Perform work that involves visual inspection of predefined construction areas and reading and interpretation of utility maps to determine the presence of underground utilities, while using special electronic equipment to detect and locate said utilities. The utilities may include gas & electric within the predefined construction area.

This is a physically demanding, field-based position that requires working outdoors for the majority of the workday in all weather conditions, frequently away from office facilities and restroom access. The Locating Technician must be able to safely walk, stand, bend, kneel, and lift equipment and materials throughout an 8-hour shift while meeting a fixed schedule of Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and occasional Saturdays as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Ability to lift and carry moderately heavy objects [e.g., up to 50 lbs.] on a frequent basis; use basic equipment and tools properly and safely; walk and stand continuously for extended periods (up to 8 hours per day) on uneven terrain; and perform manual labor under adverse field conditions (heat, cold, precipitation, mud, snow, ice).
  • Willingness and ability to perform manual work following verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and complete daily activities per daily work schedule.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for a fixed schedule (Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and occasional Saturdays) with dependability and consistency.
  • Must have a personal vehicle (even if driving Company vehicle).
  • Must be responsible for basic upkeep (e.g., cleanliness) of Company vehicles.
  • Willing to provide written consent for GPS tracking of location (via Company issued cell phone, tablet, laptop, or Company-issued vehicle).
  • Able to pass the Northeast Gas Association (NGA) Operator Qualify OQ required tasks.
  • Pass Random Drug & Alcohol Tests.
  • Able to control possible stress daily from the workload and possible client/customer.
  • Knowledge and understanding of underground gas and electric utility locating.

Essential Requirements:

  • Willing to provide written consent for GPS tracking of location (via Company issued cell phone, tablet, laptop, or company issued vehicle) § Must have Northeast Gas Association (NGA) Operator Qualifications OQ for tasks 21 and 70 (at a minimum).
  • Must be able to pass Northeast Gas Association (NGA) Operator Qualifications OQ additional needed tasks.
  • Able to control possible stress daily from the workload and possible client/customer.
  • Knowledge and understanding of underground utilities (gas, electric, water, etc.)
  • Pass a pre-employment drug & alcohol test.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and clean Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) record.
  • Experience in locating and marking various types of underground utilities using multiple types of equipment.
  • Interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge and full understanding of Code Rule 753 and 811 Dig Safely.
  • Pass Pre-employment and Random drug/Alcohol testing

DOT / Drug & Alcohol Testing Compliance:

This position is safety-sensitive and subject to U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing regulations. As a condition of employment, employees must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and remain eligible for random testing. Marijuana use is prohibited for this position under federal DOT regulations, regardless of New York State or any other state law. A positive test for marijuana will result in removal from safety-sensitive duties and may result in termination of employment.

Minimum Qualifications (Incl. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Demonstrated ability to perform physically demanding field work, including lifting and carrying moderately heavy objects [e.g., up to 50 lbs.], walking and standing for extended periods on uneven surfaces, frequent bending, kneeling, and crouching, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Willingness and ability to perform manual work following verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and complete daily activities per daily work schedule.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to maintain regular, reliable attendance for the scheduled hours of work and to arrive on time consistently.

The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
