Job Description

The buyer directs the content strategy, product selection and use of customer and trend information to support the merchandise strategies of the division. The buyer partners with the buy planner to achieve financial objectives. Specifically, the buyer and the buy planner are jointly accountable to meet and exceed departmental sales volume, gross margin and gross-margin-return-on-investment (GMROI) targets.

A day in the life...

  • Develop product plan to support seasonal department merchandise strategies based on customers' expectations and fashion trend
  • Develop deep multi-channel expertise; including presentation knowledge, customer behavior and competition for both FLS and Online channels
  • Negotiate exclusive offerings, terms, pricing, vendor-funded-markdowns, return-to-vendor agreements, drop-ship programs, co-op, etc.
  • Manage and direct inventory management in season; ensuring effective analysis and decision making regarding markdowns, claims, re-orders, etc.
  • Partner with buy planner and financial planner on business reviews, open-to-buy management and plan revisions to achieve financial goals and strategic objectives
  • Teach, coach and motivate assistant buyer(s) to drive in season performance management and become exceptional pickers of product, editors of assortments and business managers

You own this if you have...

  • 4+ years of experience as a multichannel/omni-channel retail Buyer or equivalent
  • Strong negotiation skills and experience maintaining vendor relationships
  • Demonstrated understanding of Nordstrom's retail and service environment
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Bachelor's degree in Merchandising or related field (preferred)
  • Experience managing and supporting a high sales volume category (high SKU count, heavy seasonality, high revenue ($20M+)) (preferred)
