Nonprofit Software Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nonprofit software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nonprofit Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, experience with web and mobile development, and a solid understanding of software engineering principles, often demonstrated by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with common nonprofit technology platforms (such as Salesforce Nonprofit Cloud), databases, open-source tools, and relevant certifications like Certified ScrumMaster or AWS certifications are advantageous. Excellent communication, a collaborative spirit, and a passion for mission-driven work are standout soft skills in this space. These skills help ensure software solutions are effective, scalable, and aligned with the unique goals and resource constraints of nonprofit organizations.

What is a nonprofit software engineer?

A Nonprofit Software Engineer designs, develops, and maintains software solutions specifically for nonprofit organizations. Their work often involves creating donor management systems, volunteer coordination platforms, or data reporting tools to support the nonprofit's mission. They may work with limited budgets and open-source technologies to create cost-effective and efficient solutions. In addition to technical skills, they often collaborate with nonprofit teams to understand organizational needs and ensure technology aligns with their goals.

What types of projects does a nonprofit software engineer typically work on within nonprofit organizations?

Nonprofit Software Engineers often develop and maintain donor management systems, create custom web applications for outreach and fundraising, and integrate various platforms to streamline organizational workflows. They may also work on data reporting tools, volunteer management software, or develop features that enhance accessibility and public engagement. Projects tend to prioritize cost-effectiveness, security, and scalability given the limited resources of many nonprofits. Teams are usually collaborative and mission-focused, with opportunities to work closely with program managers, fundraisers, and external stakeholders. This role allows you to see the tangible impact of your technology solutions on real-world causes.

Virtuous is on a mission to inspire global generosity by helping nonprofits build better relationships with their donors. We offer a modern software platform that provides mid-sized charities with elegant tools for fundraising, marketing, volunteerism, and online giving.
Our talented team is driven to disrupt the status quo in the nonprofit sector. We are hungry, humble, and committed to delivering best-in-class software solutions, customer success interactions, and sales experiences to the world's leading nonprofits
We also recognize the importance of giving back and making a difference in the communities where we live and work. That's why we practice radical generosity by volunteering at nonprofits or going the extra mile for our team and the customers we serve. We take our work seriously, but we don't take ourselves too seriously. We believe that life is too short not to love what you do.
The ideal candidate for Virtuous embodies our values by:
  • Asking questions with a spirit of curiosity
  • Giving feedback freely with candor & grace, welcoming it in return
  • Displaying a passion for philanthropy and technology
  • Serving with joy. Everyone is willing to make the coffee!
  • Celebrating the wins & milestones of others

Position Summary
Virtuous is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help build and scale our CRM+ platform, the system that powers fundraising and donor engagement for the world's leading nonprofits. You'll work primarily in C# and Vue within an Azure and SQL Server environment. You'll partner closely with product, design, and other engineers to ship features that directly impact how organizations connect with their donors and advance their missions.
Virtuous CRM+ is built on the latest version of .NET and Vue, and we are actively building AI-first features on the leading edge of SaaS software.
This is a senior, hands-on role for someone who is AI-Forward and thinks like a Product Engineer. You won't just implement stories; you'll understand the "why" behind the work and actively collaborate with the team to deliver innovation and customer value. You'll be expected to actively influence product direction and operate with high agency and ownership within your squad.
Virtuous is a high-growth SaaS company with a 30-person EPD team. We move at the speed of a startup while having a big enough team to ship amazing work.
  • Assuming good intent & demonstrating trust in others
  • Pursuing relationships with people different from themselves & creates space to be human

Responsibilities
  • Build, and maintain features across our CRM+ platform using C#, .NET, and SQL Server
  • Architect and operate services on Azure, with an eye toward scalability, reliability, and cost
  • Partner with Product and Design to shape requirements - not just receive them - bringing a customer-first perspective to technical tradeoffs
  • Use AI tools, especially Claude Code, as a core part of your daily workflow: for prototyping, code generation, testing, debugging, documentation, and accelerating delivery
  • Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code and unit tests - and participate actively in the code review process
  • Mentor and pair program other engineers and help raise the bar for engineering practices across the team
  • Influence best practice patterns for QA, CICD, and product architecture
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues with a sense of urgency and ownership
  • Contribute to technical strategy and help evolve our architecture as the platform scales

You Must Have
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with deep expertise in C#/.NET
  • 3+ years of experience with Vue; React or Angular experience transfers well
  • Strong experience building and operating production systems on Azure
  • Solid experience with SQL Server - schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning
  • Genuine enthusiasm for AI-assisted development. Hands-on experience using Claude Code as part of your engineering workflow
  • A customer-first, product-minded approach to engineering. You ask "how could this feature be better?" as often as "how do we build this feature?"
  • Passion for contributing to customer discovery conversations, root cause analyses (RCAs), and occasional customer demos
  • Experience working on CRM or data-intensive platforms is a strong plus
  • Experience working with Datadog, Playwright, and other observability and testing tools a plus
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort working cross-functionally with Product, Design, and Customer Success
  • A track record of owning projects end-to-end, from design through deployment and monitoring

What Makes You Stand Out
  • Proven experience in high-growth SaaS software
  • History of using AI tools to meaningfully speed up delivery without sacrificing quality
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and frequent (multiple times per week) deployment cadence
  • A bias toward simplicity and pragmatism over unnecessary complexity
  • Comfort giving and receiving direct, kind feedback

What We Offer
  • Market competitive pay leveraging Carta data
  • Employee recognition through Bonusly (birthdays, anniversaries, achievements, etc.)
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company matching- 50% match up to 6% of compensation after 90 days
  • We value our employee's work-life balance and encourage taking advantage of Unlimited PTO
  • Supportive time off including paid volunteer days and company holidays
  • Employer-contributed healthcare benefits, encompassing medical, dental, and vision coverage, with plans available for dependents and choices for Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
  • 12 weeks primary parent leave, 4 weeks secondary parent leave - full pay (adoption as well)
  • We pride ourselves on Community and host exciting company outings and events.

We've recently noticed an increase in recruitment scams where individuals are impersonating recruiters to obtain personal or financial information through fraudulent interviews and job offers.
