How much do nondestructive testing jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for nondestructive testing in the United States is $30.07, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $27.40 and $32.45 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is Nondestructive Testing (NDT)?

Nondestructive Testing (NDT) refers to a range of analysis techniques used in science and industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component, or system without causing damage. NDT methods are used to detect flaws, measure material properties, and ensure the integrity and safety of equipment and structures. Common techniques include ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant testing. Because NDT does not compromise the usefulness of the tested item, it's widely used in industries like aerospace, construction, manufacturing, and oil and gas.

Is NDT testing a good career?

Nondestructive Testing (NDT) is a stable career that involves inspecting materials and structures without causing damage, often requiring certifications such as ASNT. It offers opportunities in industries like aerospace, manufacturing, and energy, with potential for advancement and good job stability. Skills in technical inspection, attention to detail, and knowledge of testing tools are essential for success in this field.

What jobs make 10,000 a month without a degree?

In nondestructive testing, high-paying roles such as certified inspectors or specialized technicians can earn around $10,000 per month, especially with extensive experience, certifications, and working in high-demand industries like aerospace or energy. These positions often require technical skills, safety training, and industry-specific certifications but may not always require a traditional college degree.

What is the highest paid NDT?

In nondestructive testing (NDT), the highest-paid roles are often senior-level inspectors, certified Level III technicians, or specialized inspectors with expertise in advanced methods like ultrasonic or radiographic testing. These positions typically require extensive experience, certifications such as ASNT Level III, and work in high-demand industries like aerospace, oil and gas, or power generation, leading to higher salaries. Salaries can vary based on location, industry, and certifications, but experienced senior NDT professionals generally earn the most within the field.

What is the difference between Nondestructive Testing vs Radiographic Testing?

AspectNondestructive TestingRadiographic Testing
CertificationsASNT certifications, Level I/II/IIIASNT certifications, Level I/II/III, Radiography-specific
Work EnvironmentVarious, including industrial sites, pipelines, aerospaceIndustrial, construction, aerospace, often in controlled environments
Industry UsageWidespread across manufacturing, oil & gas, aerospaceCommon in weld inspection, aerospace, power plants

Both Nondestructive Testing and Radiographic Testing are essential methods for inspecting materials without damage. Nondestructive Testing encompasses various techniques, including radiography, ultrasonic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant testing. Radiographic Testing specifically uses X-rays or gamma rays to detect internal flaws. While radiography is a subset of Nondestructive Testing, Nondestructive Testing offers a broader range of inspection methods suitable for different applications and environments.

How much does NDT get paid?

Nondestructive Testing (NDT) technicians typically earn between $40,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Certified NDT professionals with specialized skills and advanced certifications can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $80,000. The job often involves working in industrial environments with tools like ultrasonic, radiographic, or magnetic particle testing equipment.

What are some common challenges faced by Nondestructive Testing (NDT) professionals in the field?

Nondestructive Testing professionals often work in environments where accuracy and safety are paramount, which can present significant challenges. Field conditions may include working at heights, in confined spaces, or outdoors in varying weather. Additionally, interpreting test results requires a keen eye for detail and up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, as incorrect assessments can have serious consequences. Collaboration with engineers and other technicians is frequent, and clear communication is essential to ensure that findings are understood and acted upon appropriately.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Nondestructive Testing (NDT) Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nondestructive Testing (NDT) Technician, you need a solid understanding of material properties, inspection methods, and safety standards, typically supported by relevant technical training or certification (such as ASNT Level I, II, or III). Familiarity with NDT tools and technologies like ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant testing is essential. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial to accurately assess material integrity, ensure safety, and prevent costly failures in critical infrastructure.
