About this Position
Duluth Parks & Recreation is proud to serve our community with programs and activities year-round, throughout our parks for all ages and abilities. We are currently accepting applications for the following Recreation Instructor opportunities. General Programs
  • Work Schedule: Part-time; hours vary depending on season and availability. Schedule may vary week-to-week to include daytime, evenings, and weekends.
  • Support and facilitate a wide range of recreation program offerings, including: indoor pickleball attendant, toddler play time, hiking, ice rink attendant, community events, youth sport sessions, and other recreation programs.
  • All training provided; prior experience planning and leading activities is valuable.
Summary/Purpose
Recreation Instructors develop and conduct outdoor recreation programs that support Duluth Parks & Recreation's efforts to increase public understanding and awareness of recreation opportunities, foster environmental stewardship, and the appreciation, enjoyment, and utilization of our facilities and resources.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
  1. Assist in planning and organizing recreational activities and special events.
  2. Supervise and monitor scheduled recreational activities and special events.
  3. Conduct necessary set-up and takedown of needed equipment as required prior to and after recreational activities and special events.
  4. Provide a safe, fun, and supportive learning environment for all participants.
  5. Contribute to evaluating recreation programs with other staff and affiliated cosponsoring agencies.
  6. Assist with recreation programs; effectively communicate and engage with youth, families, adults, and the general public.
  7. Effectively monitor the behavior of participants to maintain order and safety.
  8. Provide exceptional customer service; answer questions effectively and appropriately, and follow-up as required.
  9. Maintain control of recreation program participants while identifying individual needs.
  10. Communicate with Recreation Specialist regarding concerns or questions, including safety and improvements to efficiencies and services provided.
  11. Maintain and organize equipment.
  12. Inspect equipment and recreation areas to ensure safety and cleanliness and report discrepancies to the division.
  13. Perform onsite maintenance activities such as shoveling, sweeping, mopping, and general cleaning as needed.
  14. Be an effective team member by exhibiting self-motivation, supporting other employees in handling tasks, interacting effectively and respectfully with others, showing a desire to contribute to the team effort, accepting assignments willingly, and completing tasks within agreed upon timelines.

A. Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license or privilege.
