What is a non profit media professional?

A Non Profit Media professional is someone who creates, manages, and distributes media content for nonprofit organizations. Their work often includes producing videos, managing social media, writing press releases, and coordinating public relations efforts to raise awareness and support for the nonprofit's mission. These professionals use storytelling and digital tools to engage supporters, share impact stories, and advocate for causes. Unlike for-profit media roles, their focus is on furthering the organization's social or charitable goals rather than generating revenue.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in non profit media?

To thrive in Nonprofit Media, you need strong storytelling, journalism, and content creation skills, often supported by a relevant degree in communications, journalism, or media. Familiarity with digital publishing platforms, social media management tools, and multimedia editing software is typically required. Outstanding collaboration, adaptability, and a passion for mission-driven work are crucial soft skills in this field. These abilities ensure compelling, credible communication that advances the organization’s cause and engages supporters effectively.

How does a media professional in a non profit organization typically collaborate with other departments to achieve organizational goals?

Media professionals in non-profit organizations often work closely with fundraising, outreach, and program teams to craft messages that support campaigns and raise awareness. They collaborate on content creation, such as press releases, newsletters, and social media posts, ensuring that all communications are aligned with the organization's mission and objectives. Regular meetings and cross-departmental planning sessions are common to coordinate efforts, share updates, and measure the impact of media strategies. This collaborative environment helps ensure that media efforts effectively support broader organizational initiatives.

CoFounder /President & COO for Nonprofit Edtech Media Organization (Portland)

Accelerator Media

Portland, ME • On-site

Part-time

Job description

Co-Founder / President & COO — Accelerator Media

Accelerator Media is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit building an edtech media franchise with startup energy. We produce the Curiosity Entangled podcast and are developing the Insectopia franchise; an animated series and an AI‑powered mobile AR game that gets kids outdoors discovering biodiversity. The long‑term vision includes documentaries and independent films that inspire curiosity and centuries‑thinking on a global scale.

We have a 10‑member international board, products in development, and creative momentum. What we’re missing is a business‑minded co‑leader to build the other half of this organization.

The Role

You would co‑lead Accelerator Media alongside the founder, owning the business, financial, and operational strategy of the organization. You’d have equal standing in leadership and decision‑making, working with the founder and board to shape the direction of a growing nonprofit media organization.

What You’d Own
  • Fundraising strategy: grants, corporate sponsorship, foundation support, and revenue generation
  • Financial planning and budgeting as the organization scales
  • Operational systems and infrastructure to support growth
  • Partnership development across edtech, media, and gaming sectors
  • Business model development, including potential B‑corp spinoff for IP equity
  • Board engagement on governance, strategy, and sustainability
What We’re Looking For
  • Experience in nonprofit or startup business development, fundraising, or operational leadership
  • Someone who hears about creative traction and immediately thinks about funding models, revenue streams, and growth
  • Financial planning skills
  • Comfort with ambiguity and early‑stage building
  • A genuine connection to the mission: using technology and storytelling to inspire curiosity and long‑term thinking
  • Edtech, media, or gaming familiarity is a plus but not required. What matters more is that you know how to build a sustainable organization and want to build one that matters.
What’s Already Built
  • 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered in 2019, operations launched in 2024
  • 10‑member international board
  • Curiosity Entangled podcast in active production
  • Insectopia animated series: 22‑page pitch bible and proof‑of‑concept voiced animatic
  • Insectopia Explorer mobile game: working prototype on Hugging Face integrating computer vision and AI
Compensation

This is a sweat equity role. There is no salary at this stage. The organization is pre‑funding, sustained by volunteer labor and small board contributions. Building sustainable funding is a core reason this role exists. Compensation will be equitable once funding allows, and there is potential for IP equity through a B‑corp spinoff as the organization scales. This is a true co‑leadership position with equal standing.

Reach out if you want to build something that inspires curiosity and long‑term thinking about our shared future.
