What is a non profit media professional?

A Non Profit Media professional is someone who creates, manages, and distributes media content for nonprofit organizations. Their work often includes producing videos, managing social media, writing press releases, and coordinating public relations efforts to raise awareness and support for the nonprofit's mission. These professionals use storytelling and digital tools to engage supporters, share impact stories, and advocate for causes. Unlike for-profit media roles, their focus is on furthering the organization's social or charitable goals rather than generating revenue.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in non profit media?

To thrive in Nonprofit Media, you need strong storytelling, journalism, and content creation skills, often supported by a relevant degree in communications, journalism, or media. Familiarity with digital publishing platforms, social media management tools, and multimedia editing software is typically required. Outstanding collaboration, adaptability, and a passion for mission-driven work are crucial soft skills in this field. These abilities ensure compelling, credible communication that advances the organization’s cause and engages supporters effectively.

How does a media professional in a non profit organization typically collaborate with other departments to achieve organizational goals?

Media professionals in non-profit organizations often work closely with fundraising, outreach, and program teams to craft messages that support campaigns and raise awareness. They collaborate on content creation, such as press releases, newsletters, and social media posts, ensuring that all communications are aligned with the organization's mission and objectives. Regular meetings and cross-departmental planning sessions are common to coordinate efforts, share updates, and measure the impact of media strategies. This collaborative environment helps ensure that media efforts effectively support broader organizational initiatives.

Embarcadero Media Foundation, an award-winning, independent nonprofit media company on the San Francisco Peninsula, is looking for freelance writers with excellent feature writing skills, storytelling flair and well-honed journalistic instincts to work with editors on its lifestyle desk.

Writing assignments cover everything from profiles and event roundups to Q&As and features, with subjects including food, culture, arts and entertainment, real estate, home and garden, outdoors and the environment. Freelancers are also encouraged to pitch story ideas based on their areas of expertise and knowledge of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties (up to but not including San Jose southward).

Freelance writers need to be reliable, independent, sharp, communicative and able to meet deadlines without exception. Some journalism experience and residency in the Bay Area is preferred. Pay rates depend upon experience and the type of assignment.

Interested applicants should email a resume, cover letter and 3-5 of your best clips to lifestyle@embarcaderopublishing.com. Please note in your letter if there is a particular publication for which you'd like to write or subject(s)/cities you're interested in writing about.
