How much do non licensed attorney jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 14, 2026, the average yearly pay for non licensed attorney in the United States is $98,330.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $65,500.00 and $120,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the typical responsibilities of a non licensed attorney?

Non Licensed Attorneys, often referred to as legal assistants or law clerks, typically support licensed attorneys by conducting legal research, drafting documents, organizing case files, and assisting with trial preparation. While they cannot represent clients in court or provide legal advice, their work is vital to the efficiency of a legal team. Collaboration with paralegals, attorneys, and administrative staff is common, and attention to detail is crucial given the nature of legal work. This role offers valuable experience and exposure to various areas of law, which can be advantageous for those planning to become licensed attorneys in the future.

What is a non licensed attorney?

A non licensed attorney is someone who has completed law school and may hold a law degree but has not been admitted to practice law by passing a state bar exam or obtaining a law license. As a result, they are not authorized to represent clients in court or provide legal advice. However, they may work in legal support roles, research, compliance, or other positions that do not require bar membership. Non licensed attorneys often assist licensed attorneys with case preparation, document review, and other legal tasks under supervision.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a non licensed attorney?

To succeed as a Non Licensed Attorney (also known as a law clerk or legal assistant), strong research, legal writing, and analytical skills are essential, typically supported by a Juris Doctor (JD) degree or equivalent legal education. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, and proficiency in document management systems, are commonly required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and organization help these professionals excel while supporting licensed attorneys and legal teams. These skills are important because they ensure accuracy, efficiency, and effective support in preparing cases and legal documents.

While both roles work in legal environments, Non Licensed Attorneys may handle more complex legal work depending on jurisdiction, whereas Paralegals focus on administrative and research tasks.
