Job description

Title: OpenShift Engineer – Architecture & Cluster Engineering

Location: Dallas TX

Interview: its a face to face/In Person Interview

Position Overview

The ideal candidate for this OpenShift Engineer role will be responsible for the architecture, design, engineering, deployment, and ongoing optimization of enterprise OpenShift environments supporting Oncor’s Platform-as-a-Service offerings.

This role is heavily focused on designing and building OpenShift clusters from the ground up, including infrastructure architecture, cluster topology, compute/VM sizing, networking, storage, security, and platform configuration. The successful candidate will be able to take an OpenShift environment from initial architecture and infrastructure planning through installation, configuration, validation, and production readiness.

This is not primarily an OpenShift application support or cluster administration role. Candidates should have demonstrated hands-on experience designing and implementing OpenShift/Kubernetes platforms, preferably in greenfield environments.

Key Responsibilities

Architect, design, and build OpenShift clusters from the ground up based on enterprise application, infrastructure, security, and availability requirements.
Develop OpenShift cluster architecture, including:
Control plane and worker node design
Cluster topology and sizing
VM/compute resource requirements
High availability and resiliency
Networking architecture
Storage architecture
Security and access controls
Determine appropriate VM sizing, node configurations, compute capacity, and resource allocation based on workload and platform requirements.
Lead or perform OpenShift installation, configuration, and initial cluster build activities.
Design and implement enterprise OpenShift environments across infrastructure platforms.
Configure and integrate OpenShift components including OpenShift Data Foundation, OpenShift Platform Plus, Advanced Cluster Management, and Advanced Cluster Security.
Design and implement storage solutions, including Ceph/OpenShift Data Foundation.
Design and configure networking components including protocols, firewalls, load balancers, ingress, routing, and connectivity requirements.
Establish cluster security architecture, policies, authentication, authorization, and platform security controls.
Develop standards and repeatable patterns for OpenShift cluster deployments.
Automate infrastructure and OpenShift deployment/configuration wherever possible.
Troubleshoot complex platform-level issues involving compute, networking, storage, Kubernetes, and OpenShift components.
Support the evolution and optimization of Oncor’s Platform-as-a-Service architecture.
Collaborate with infrastructure, security, networking, application, and DevOps teams to ensure the OpenShift platform meets enterprise requirements.
Assist project teams with application migrations and modernization once the underlying OpenShift platform is established.
Document architecture decisions, cluster designs, deployment procedures, standards, and operational processes.
Provide technical leadership, knowledge sharing, and mentoring to other members of the team.
Required Skills and Experience

Strong hands-on OpenShift architecture and engineering experience.
Demonstrated experience designing and building OpenShift clusters from the ground up, not solely administering existing environments.
Experience with OpenShift cluster installation, configuration, topology, and infrastructure planning.
Strong understanding of OpenShift/Kubernetes architecture, including control plane, worker nodes, operators, networking, storage, and cluster services.
Experience making VM sizing, compute, memory, storage, and capacity planning decisions for OpenShift clusters.
OpenShift Administration.
OpenShift Data Foundation.
OpenShift Platform Plus.
Advanced Cluster Management (ACM).
Advanced Cluster Security (ACS).
Ceph Administration.
Extensive knowledge of Linux containers/Docker, Kubernetes, and containerized application/microservices architectures.
Strong understanding of enterprise networking concepts including protocols, firewalls, load balancers, ingress, routing, and connectivity.
Experience with automated deployment and infrastructure automation tools.
Conceptual and applied understanding of DevOps concepts, tools, and practices.
Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools such as GitLab.
Experience designing platforms capable of supporting enterprise-scale workloads, high availability, and resiliency.
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to work across multiple technical projects.
Ability to communicate complex technical concepts and architecture decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Willingness to document solutions, share knowledge, and train other team members.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience building greenfield OpenShift environments in enterprise or highly regulated environments.
Experience designing OpenShift clusters across virtualized infrastructure.
Experience with OpenShift cluster lifecycle management and upgrades.
Experience with infrastructure-as-code and configuration management.
Working knowledge of Java, JBoss, nginx, Node.js, and enterprise application architectures.
Experience migrating and refactoring applications to containerized workloads.
Working knowledge of SSL certificates.
Experience with Agile teams, tools, practices, and ceremonies.
Container- and pod-level monitoring and logging experience, including Dynatrace and QRadar.
Keeps abreast of relevant industry standards and emerging technologies.
