How much do non exempt software engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 29, 2026, the average yearly pay for non exempt software engineer in Raleigh, NC is $143,405.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $116,600.00 and $168,200.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What engineers make $500,000?

Highly experienced software engineers, especially those in senior or specialized roles such as machine learning engineers, data engineers, or those working at major tech companies, can earn $500,000 or more annually. Compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options, particularly in competitive markets or executive-level positions.

What is the difference between Non Exempt Software Engineer vs Exempt Software Engineer?

AspectNon Exempt Software EngineerExempt Software Engineer
Overtime EligibilityEligible for overtime payNot eligible for overtime pay
Work HoursTypically limited to 40 hours/weekOften works beyond standard hours without additional pay
CredentialsUsually requires a bachelor's degree in CS or related fieldSame as non-exempt, often with more experience
Work EnvironmentCorporate or tech company settings, often in roles with clear task boundariesSimilar environments, but with more flexibility in work hours

The main difference between a Non Exempt Software Engineer and an Exempt Software Engineer lies in overtime eligibility and work hours. Non Exempt Software Engineers are eligible for overtime pay and typically work standard hours, while Exempt Software Engineers do not qualify for overtime and may work longer hours without additional compensation. Both roles generally require similar educational backgrounds and work in comparable environments.

Is it better to be exempt or nonexempt?

For a nonexempt software engineer, being nonexempt means eligible for overtime pay and requires tracking hours worked, while exempt status typically excludes overtime but may offer higher base pay. The choice depends on work hours, compensation preferences, and company policies; nonexempt roles often involve more structured schedules and time tracking. Understanding the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) classifications helps determine which status aligns with your job responsibilities and work environment.

Can I make 200k a year as a software engineer?

Software engineers can earn $200,000 or more annually, especially with seniority, specialized skills, or working in high-paying industries like finance or tech. Achieving this level often requires extensive experience, advanced knowledge of programming languages, and sometimes working in roles that include bonuses or stock options.

Is it true that AI will replace software engineers?

AI is unlikely to fully replace software engineers, especially non-exempt software engineers, as their roles involve complex problem-solving, creativity, and understanding user needs that AI cannot replicate. Instead, AI tools are increasingly used to assist engineers in coding, testing, and automation, enhancing productivity rather than replacing the profession. Software engineers will continue to be essential for designing, maintaining, and improving software systems.
