Description
Job Title: Security Officer
FLSA: Non-Exempt, Hourly, Full Time (40 Hours per week)
Reports to: Health & Safety Manager
Wage Range: $18.00 per hour
Summary
Serving more than 300,000 adults and children each year, the Connecticut Science Center is the state's premier destination for informal science learning, a top tourist attraction, a hub for teacher training, and one of the state's foremost resources for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The Security Officer is responsible for providing a safe and secure work environment for the Science Center employees, partners, visitors, guests, and contractors, as well as protect physical assets and maintain good working relationships with neighbors and law enforcement.
Key Responsibilities
• Assume a proactive and participatory role in maintaining a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for staff and visitors in and around the facility, as well as preventing theft or damage to the building and property.
• Perform a variety of tasks to enforce/execute established policies, practices and protocols including, but not limited to, visitor control and parking, school bus arrival & departures, foot patrol of building and grounds, opening & closing of facility.
• Provide coverage at the security desk or podium facilitating and overseeing all functions of that command center including, but not limited to, issuing visitor passes, contractor badges, answering telephone, assisting with bus arrivals and departures, loading dock intercom, monitoring cameras, emergency system control panels and visible access points.
• Provide general information and assistance to visitors and staff regarding matters of lost & found, first aid, wheelchairs, facility/operational issues, etc.
• Administer First Responder/First Aid services when necessary.
• Conduct regular rounds to ensure building and property are safe and secure remaining constantly vigilant checking for fires, vandalism, suspicious activity/persons, or any other safety/fire hazards.
• Take prudent and corrective action as necessary, reporting situation/condition immediately.
• Write detailed, legible incident, accident and unusual occurrence reports and other written documentation as required.
• Provide shift changeover status information to supervisors and colleagues to ensure continuity in coverage.
• Promptly communicate with supervisors and management staff and reports issues, situations, protocols, trends, maintenance issues, and practices that might otherwise affect the security and/or safety of the Connecticut Science Center facility, its staff and/or visitors.
• Provide assistance to other departments, individuals and teams (i.e.: setting up/breaking down from events, interacting with visitors, managing crowds, monitoring galleries/point of entry, assisting with cleanup/maintenance, etc.) to ensure the effective, efficient and high-quality operation of the facility, its programs, events and other offerings.
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements and Qualifications
• Must possess valid CT Guard Card and maintain its validity at their own expense.
• CPR and First Aid Certified
• High school diploma or equivalent with at least three (3) years relevant experience. Some college or other education/training preferred
• Fluent in Spanish a plus

• Accomplished user of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Outlook and Word on a PC Platform.
• Possess a friendly, outgoing, yet professional customer focused demeanor.
• Ability to remain calm, take the lead, make prudent and sound decisions and focus during emergency or highly stressful situations.
• Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Must have a proven ability to effectively use and visually/audibly monitor electronic security devices and tools such as radios, closed circuit camera monitors, fire/security alarm control panels, access control computer terminals, intrusion detection systems, emergency voice communications systems and miscellaneous other life/safety/security systems.
• Must be dependable, flexible, with a "can do" attitude and a keen attention to detail.
• Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends and some holidays as needed.
• Ability and expectation to work on site.
• A strong commitment to the community inclusion goals of the science center and in the specific functions of this role.
Physical Requirements:
• Repetitive movement of hands and fingers - typing and/or writing
• Subject to stand, walk and sit for long periods of time
• Subject to run, bend, kneel, squat, carry, reach, and climb stairs
• Able to see, speak and hear
• Ability to push, pull, twist, and turn
• Ability to frequently lift-up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
