JOB SUMMARY
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to assist in the design, development, and production of promotional and informational materials for City programs and services. This entry-level, part-time classification performs routine duties related to graphic design, digital content, and program support while learning City standards and processes.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from the Computer Specialist class in that the latter performs more complex and technical work involving computer systems, software support, and advanced digital services, while the Computer Assistant provides support in graphic design, marketing materials, and basic website updates under closer supervision.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from higher level management staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Assists in creating, designing, and updating promotional materials including flyers, banners, brochures, posters, newsletters, logos, t-shirts, billboards, and other marketing collateral.
  • Supports layout and production design for advertisements, publications, and digital content using desktop publishing and graphic design software.
  • Assists with photo editing, photo selection, copy layout, and content updates to ensure visually appealing and accurate materials.
  • Takes photographs or video for use in City publications, social media, and marketing materials.
  • Helps maintain consistency and unity across City publications by adhering to established branding and style guidelines.
  • Assists in updating and maintaining content on the City's website.
  • Coordinates with vendors to obtain quotes, place orders, and track production of printed materials and promotional items.
  • Prepares and processes materials for printing, including banners, overlays, and apparel items.
  • Provides general support to departmental projects, programs, and events, including setup of promotional displays.
  • Reviews materials to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with City standards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  • Basic graphic design principles, including layout, typography, and color theory.
  • Standard office practices and procedures.
  • Principles of marketing and visual communication.
  • Basic website content management concepts.
  • City branding and style guideline concepts (or ability to learn).
Ability to:
  • Use desktop publishing and graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) or similar programs.
  • Create visually appealing and organized layouts.
  • Edit images and formatting content.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Organize work, meet deadlines, and manage multiple assignments.
  • Work collaboratively with staff and external vendors.
Education and Training: Experience:
Six months' experience using graphic design or publishing software.
Training:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License and a satisfactory driving record.
Physical Requirements:
Must possess the ability to occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information; ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Position requires prolonged sitting and regular standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in preparing reports using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading written reports and work-related documents. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.
BENEFITS AND COMPENSATION
This is a non-benefited, at-will part-time position; employee shall not work in excess of 960 total hours per fiscal year. Hourly compensation will depend on qualifications, prior experience and skills. Employment with the City may be discontinued at any time without cause, notice or right of appeal or hearing.
PAID SICK LEAVE
Under the California Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 and in accordance with City of Baldwin Park Paid Sick Leave Policy the successful candidate will receive 40 hours of paid sick leave in a 12-month period.
