What is a non clinical radiologist?

A Non Clinical Radiologist is a trained radiologist who works outside of direct patient care and medical imaging interpretation. They may work in fields like medical consulting, healthcare administration, informatics, education, or artificial intelligence development. These roles leverage their radiology expertise to influence medical policies, improve healthcare technologies, or train future radiologists. Non-clinical radiologists often transition due to personal preferences, work-life balance, or a desire to impact healthcare beyond traditional image reading.

What types of projects or responsibilities might a non clinical radiologist typically handle?

Non Clinical Radiologists often work on tasks such as medical imaging informatics, research and development, regulatory affairs, quality assurance, or education and training within healthcare organizations or the medical imaging industry. They may collaborate with clinical radiologists, data scientists, engineers, and regulatory professionals to improve imaging technologies, ensure compliance with industry standards, or develop best practices. Typical responsibilities include reviewing imaging protocols, analyzing large datasets for research, participating in product development, and creating educational materials or conducting training. This role generally involves less direct patient contact and focuses more on supporting advancements in the field of radiology from a technical or strategic perspective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a non clinical radiologist?

To thrive as a Non Clinical Radiologist, you should have a robust background in radiology or imaging sciences, strong analytical skills, and an advanced degree such as an MD, DO, or PhD in a related field. Familiarity with PACS systems, medical image analysis software, and experience with quality assurance processes or regulatory compliance are highly valuable. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and attention to detail help distinguish professionals in non-clinical roles within radiology. These skills ensure accurate analysis, clear reporting, and effective collaboration across research, training, or industry settings where patient-facing clinical duties are not the focus.

Job description

Musculoskeletal Radiologist

Join a department rooted in excellence. The Department of Radiology at Tufts Medical Center is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Musculoskeletal Radiologist to join our renowned Department of Radiology.

The Department honors the legacy of Alice Ettinger, MD, a pioneer in her field, who introduced the spot film imaging technique to the United States. This is an opportunity to work with a close-knit team, at a level 1 trauma center, who provides renowned academic care to a diverse patient population.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in Musculoskeletal Radiology with proficiency in interpretation of MSK MR and CT scans. Basic MSK procedural skills are required as there are typically about two MSK procedures (joint injections/aspirations and arthrograms) a day. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who is passionate about advancing patient care and clinical research, and contributing to education and training of future radiologists at a leading academic medical center.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing exceptional care to the patient by interpreting MSK MR and CT scans, bone/joint x-rays, MSK procedures (joint injections/aspirations and arthrograms), and limited MSK/soft tissue ultrasound interpretation.
  • Participate in the teaching of radiology residents and medical students. Being an active member in research projects and quality improvement projects with medical students and residents is encouraged.
  • Participation in multidisciplinary conferences and educational conferences.
  • Clinical and non-clinical work-based incentives are available and paid annually at the time of annual performance review with the Chair.
  • Have a presence on-site to collaborate with members of the department. However, partial remote work is available.
  • Weekday shifts are from 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Weekend on-call duties (Plain Film, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) are remote (home workstations are provided to each radiologist).
  • Additional opportunities such as moonlighting, academic time, administrative time, and a Section Chief role can be offered with this role depending on experience and career aspiration.

Requirements

  • Candidates must hold an MD, DO, MBBS, or equivalent degree.
  • Board eligibility/Board certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or American Osteopathic Board of Radiology (AOBR).
  • Candidates must have completed, or be in the process of completing, at the time of application, or scheduled to complete after residency, an MSK radiology fellowship.
  • Medical licensure or eligibility in Massachusetts.

Apply: Interested candidates should submit a CV and cover letter detailing clinical, academic, and teaching interests to Elizabeth Denson, Physician Recruiter Elizabeth.Denson@tuftsmedicine.org.

The salary range for this position is $440,000.00 - $535,000.00 annually. Actual compensation will be determined during the selection process and is based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, relevant experience, education, internal equity, and academic rank.
