What is a nomad developer?

A Nomad Developer is a software developer who works remotely while traveling to different locations. They typically rely on cloud-based tools, remote collaboration platforms, and flexible work arrangements to complete their tasks. This lifestyle allows them to explore new places while maintaining a steady income. Employers may hire Nomad Developers as freelancers, contractors, or full-time remote employees. Strong communication skills, self-discipline, and time management are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nomad developer?

To thrive as a Nomad Developer, you need strong coding abilities—often in web or mobile development—paired with experience in remote work environments and version control systems. Familiarity with tools like Git, cloud-based DevOps platforms, agile methodologies, and certifications in relevant programming languages or frameworks is highly beneficial. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and cross-cultural communication skills help ensure productivity and collaboration across distributed teams. These competencies are crucial for maintaining high-quality output, adaptability, and effective client or team interaction while working remotely from diverse locations.

What are some common challenges faced by nomad developers and how can they be overcome?

Nomad Developers often face challenges such as managing their own schedules across different time zones, maintaining reliable internet connectivity, and building rapport with remote teams. To overcome these obstacles, it’s important to establish a consistent routine, invest in backup internet solutions, and actively participate in team meetings and asynchronous communication channels. Flexibility, proactive communication, and setting clear expectations are key to staying productive and connected. Many companies also offer asynchronous workflows and digital collaboration tools designed to support distributed team members. Embracing these practices can help Nomad Developers thrive in both their work and nomadic lifestyle.

Job description

Jo Description

Foreperson
We're looking for candidates in New Jersey and Upstate New York.

Who are we:

Nomad Framing LLC is one of the leading framing contractors in the Tri-State area, known for our quality, speed, and commitment to excellence. Our team builds large-scale residential and mixed-use projects, and we pride ourselves on doing things the Nomad Way — where everyone plays for the team, owns their work, and looks out for each other.

As framing contractors, our scope of work typically includes everything from the construction of floors, walls, roofs, sheathing, soffits and fascias to the installation of doors, windows and stairs. We can also customize our scope to respond to the varied needs of our builders/clients. Our management team represents more than a century of on-site construction experience. We have assembled the finest team of supervisors, carpenters, and administrative personnel in the industry. Through their efforts and teamwork, Nomad Framing has pioneered innovations and advances in the framing industry.

Who are we hiring?

We are seeking an experienced Foreperson to lead and direct all aspects of field operations. This role is critical to ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget while maintaining the highest safety and quality standards. The ideal candidate has extensive construction experience, proven leadership abilities, strong communication skills, and a track record of managing large teams and complex projects successfully.

What you’ll do:

Team Leadership & Supervision:

  • Direct and supervise all field personnel including Assistant Forepersons, carpenters, laborers, and subcontractors
  • Assign daily tasks and establish production goals
  • Provide training, mentoring, and performance feedback
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and adjust resources as needed.

Project Management & Scheduling:

  • Develop and maintain detailed work schedules for employees and subcontractors
  • Coordinate task sequencing to optimize workflow and productivity
  • Report daily progress to the Project Manager
  • Identify and resolve scheduling conflicts and bottlenecks

Budget Management & Cost Control:

  • Monitor project costs and expenses against budget
  • Track labor hours and productivity metrics
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and recommend improvements
  • Manage material usage to minimize waste

Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure complete compliance with all OSHA regulations and company safety policies
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and address hazards immediately
  • Lead daily safety briefings and maintain detailed safety records
  • Investigate all incidents and implement corrective actions

Quality Control & Inspections:

  • Verify work quality against specifications and blueprints
  • Conduct inspections at key project milestones
  • Prepare comprehensive punch lists and ensure completion
  • Coordinate with client inspectors and third-party engineers

Field Administration:

  • Maintain detailed records of daily activities and progress
  • Prepare accurate incident reports and safety documentation
  • Track inventory and monitor equipment condition
  • Process and approve timesheets and work reports

Communication & Stakeholder Management:

  • Serve as primary point of contact between field operations and project management
  • Provide regular status updates to Project Managers and senior leadership
  • Interface with clients, general contractors, and building owners
  • Resolve disputes between workers and coordinate with subcontractors

Layout & Technical Skills:

  • Snap lines and establish layout reference points for framing crews
  • Interpret construction drawings and communicate specifications to crews
  • Verify proper placement of structural elements
  • Troubleshoot field issues and provide technical guidance

What do you need to succeed?

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent required; some post-secondary construction training or management certification preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 7-10 years of construction experience with at least 3-5 years as a Foreperson or in a similar supervisory capacity.
  • Technical Skills: Expert ability to read construction blueprints and drawings, proficiency with hand and power tools, strong layout and measurement skills.
  • Safety Certifications: OSHA 10-30 certification (30 preferred), First Aid/CPR/AED certification, forklift and aerial lift certifications required.
  • Leadership & Management: Proven ability to lead, motivate, and manage diverse teams, excellent communication and conflict resolution skills, strong decision-making ability.
  • Administrative: Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills, proficiency with basic computer systems and jobsite management software.
  • Other Skills: Ability to work under pressure, strong attention to detail, reliability, ability to work in all weather conditions, willingness to work flexible hours including some Saturdays.
