What does a Node.js Backend Developer do?

A Node.js Backend Developer is responsible for building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs of web applications using Node.js. They handle tasks such as creating efficient backend processes, connecting to databases, ensuring security, and integrating with frontend systems. These developers often work closely with frontend developers, DevOps teams, and product managers to deliver scalable and reliable web solutions.

What are some typical challenges Nodejs Backend Developers face when working on large-scale applications?

Nodejs Backend Developers working on large-scale applications often encounter challenges related to maintaining code quality, optimizing performance, and ensuring scalability. As projects grow, managing asynchronous operations, handling high volumes of concurrent requests, and structuring code for maintainability become more complex. Effective collaboration with frontend developers, DevOps, and QA teams is essential to address integration issues and deploy updates smoothly. Staying up to date with evolving best practices and security measures is also crucial for long-term project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Node.js Backend Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Node.js Backend Developer, you need strong proficiency in JavaScript, Node.js frameworks (like Express.js), RESTful API design, and a solid understanding of backend architecture, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION COMPANY'S JOB DESCRIPTION LINK
The backend team is responsible for keeping the GraphQL API (powered by Hasura), PubSub systems, and AWS infrastructure up and running to ensure our users can find new friends, groups, and events every day. We are a team of builders and our work is heavily concentrated on quickly building out new features to bring new functionality to the platform. Some recent and current features include polls, converting our messaging platform to PubSub, and auto-moderation of picture uploads.
Patio is looking for a team lead to bring our backend codebase and infrastructure to the next level. Our backend is just starting many transitions - GCP API endpoints to a dedicated NodeJS API, a single GraphQL to a federated GraphQL API, automated full-stack test suites for our frontend teams, and much more - and we need help from the best. Join us if you would like to be an owner of our backend ecosystem, a catalyst in our developer velocity, and a major contributor to our existing and new services.
You will:
  • Mentor other developers and grow the backend engineering team
  • Build the foundational framework for new and existing systems (NodeJS backend, Hasura GraphQL API, AWS Infrastructure)
  • Collaborate cross company to quickly plan and iterate on new features and offerings
  • Research, plan, and spearhead new services as needed for scale, certain features, and for observability/monitoring.
  • Debug production issues across multiple levels of the stack
  • Ensure our systems and infrastructure are secure, reliable, and performant
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes
You may be a fit for this role if:
  • 4+ years of industry experience at high-growth startups or companies
  • 2+ years of industry experience using NodeJS (Typescript preferred!)
  • Previous experience (as a member or team lead) of a highly efficient team (remote a plus!)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with IaC (we use Terraform to provision AWS)
  • Passion for GraphQL and the surrounding ecosystem
Our Stack:
  • Hasura backed by PostgreSQL
  • NodeJS (Typescript)
  • AWS
  • Terraform
  • Datadog & Sentry
