Job description

POSITION SUMMARY
The Welder performs structural and miscellaneous welding operations in support of excavation, civil construction, and site work projects for the Company. Working under the direction of the Site Superintendent or Foreman, the Welder fabricates, fits, and welds structural steel, pipe, plates, and miscellaneous metal components to specification in field and shop environments. This position requires demonstrated welding proficiency, strong attention to safety and quality, and the ability to work effectively as part of a construction crew.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are representative of the position and are not exhaustive. The Company may modify responsibilities to meet business needs.
Welding amp; Fabrication
  • Perform structural and miscellaneous welding using MIG, stick (SMAW), and flux-core (FCAW) processes in field and shop environments.
  • Weld structural steel members, pipe, grating, brackets, anchors, base plates, and miscellaneous metal components per project drawings, specifications, and weld procedures.
  • Perform pipe welding operations including fitting, tacking, and full-penetration welds on utility and structural pipe as required by project scope.
  • Fabricate custom components, brackets, and assemblies as directed by the Foreman or Site Superintendent.
  • Perform thermal cutting operations using plasma arc, oxy-fuel, or angle grinder as required to prepare members for welding or fit-up.
Fit-Up amp; Layout
  • Read and interpret project drawings, welding symbols, and shop fabrication details to determine joint configurations, dimensions, and weld requirements.
  • Lay out, fit, and tack weld structural assemblies in accordance with project plans and dimensional tolerances.
  • Use hand tools, levels, squares, and measuring instruments to achieve accurate fit-up and alignment prior to welding.
  • Coordinate fit-up and assembly sequence with other crew members and trades as directed by the Foreman.
Quality Control amp; Inspection
  • Perform visual inspection of completed welds for conformance with project specifications, weld symbols, and applicable codes (AWS D1.1 or as required by project).
  • Identify and correct weld discontinuities, undercut, porosity, and other defects prior to inspection or backfill.
  • Coordinate with inspectors and project management on weld inspection requirements; prepare weld documentation and records as required.
  • Maintain weld consumable control and proper pre-heat and interpass temperature procedures where specified.
Equipment Operation amp; Care
  • Set up, operate, and maintain welding machines, torches, and cutting equipment in a safe and serviceable condition.
  • Perform daily inspection of welding equipment, leads, and accessories; report deficiencies to the Foreman promptly.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area around welding operations; remove slag, spatter, and scrap metal from the work site.
Safety
  • Follow all Company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and project-specific safety requirements at all times.
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment including welding helmet, gloves, leathers, steel-toed boots, and respiratory protection as required.
  • Follow fire watch, hot work permit, and confined space procedures applicable to welding operations.
  • Participate in daily toolbox talks and pre-task safety planning activities.
  • Report any unsafe conditions or incidents to the Foreman or Site Superintendent immediately.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education amp; Experience
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of hands-on structural or pipe welding experience in a construction, fabrication, or heavy industrial environment required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in at least two welding processes (MIG, stick, or flux-core) required.
  • Experience welding in field conditions on active construction sites strongly preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational welding training or apprenticeship preferred.
Certifications amp; Technical Skills
  • AWS D1.1 structural welding qualification or equivalent preferred; ability to qualify on-site required.
  • OSHA 10 certification required; must be obtained within introductory period if not already held.
  • Ability to read and interpret welding symbols, fabrication drawings, and structural plans.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, levels, squares, and measuring instruments used in structural fit-up.
  • Valid Texas driver's license and clean driving record required.

  • Field-based position with occasional shop fabrication work as assigned.
  • Work is performed primarily on active construction project sites in varying outdoor conditions.
  • Regular exposure to heat, noise, UV radiation from welding arc, and construction site hazards.
  • May be required to work extended hours or weekends to meet project schedule requirements.
