Job Description
The Mud Engineer (Drilling Fluids Specialist) is responsible for managing and maintaining drilling fluid systems to support safe, efficient, and cost-effective drilling operations. This role involves monitoring fluid properties, optimizing performance, and ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations. The position works closely with drilling teams on location to provide technical guidance, troubleshoot issues, and maintain proper fluid performance throughout the drilling process.
Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and maintain drilling fluid systems based on well conditions and drilling requirements
  • Monitor and test drilling fluid properties to ensure optimal performance and stability
  • Adjust fluid composition to address changing downhole conditions and operational challenges
  • Provide on-site technical support to drilling operations and communicate recommendations to the drilling team
  • Track and report daily fluid usage, costs, and performance metrics
  • Troubleshoot drilling fluid-related issues such as loss circulation, wellbore instability, or contamination
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and proper handling/disposal of drilling fluids
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including daily reports, inventory tracking, and treatment logs
  • Coordinate with vendors and supply teams to ensure timely delivery of materials and chemicals
  • Support safe work practices and participate in safety meetings and site procedures

Skills
  • Strong understanding of drilling fluid systems and chemistry
  • Knowledge of drilling operations, wellbore behavior, and formation interactions
  • Ability to analyze data and make real-time operational decisions
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication skills for working with field teams and stakeholders
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, high-pressure field environments
  • Strong organizational and reporting skills
  • Basic proficiency in computer systems and reporting software

Qualifications
  • Experience working as a Mud Engineer, Drilling Fluids Engineer, or Mud Hand
  • Knowledge of land-based drilling operations and fluid systems
  • Familiarity with different drilling environments and formations
  • Ability to work rotational schedules and extended hours on drilling locations
  • Understanding of safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements related to drilling fluids
  • Relevant certifications or training in drilling fluids or wellsite operations preferred
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and operational efficiency

Job Details
Pay: $950-$1100/ per day
Location: Must be local to Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, ND
