Job description

Vice President of Operations
Drilling Mud Direct
Denver, CO
Full-Time
ABOUT DMD
Drilling Mud Direct (DMD) is a Denver-based distributor of high-yield bentonite, drilling additives, and related products serving the infrastructure and broader construction industries. Over the past several decades, DMD has grown from a straightforward truckload shipping operation into a full-service distribution business with strategically located hubs across the country, an in-house logistics company, and a mud engineering arm providing 24/7 technical support in the field. Customer service is the company's North Star, and that reputation for reliability has been central to its growth. Approaching $20 million in revenue and backed by operating partner Broadwater Capital, DMD is now focused on building the operational leadership and infrastructure needed to scale the business and pursue its next stage of growth.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
DMD is seeking an experienced and entrepreneurial operational leader to serve as its Vice President of Operations. As the company enters its next stage of growth, this role will be central to building the systems, processes, and team capabilities needed to scale the business effectively. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires both the strategic mindset to see the bigger picture and the willingness to roll up your sleeves in a lean, fast-moving environment. For the right candidate, it represents a compelling opportunity to make a significant and lasting impact on a growing company with the support of an experienced ownership group and potential for growth.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS
The Key Accountabilities for the position include but are not limited to the following:
Operational Excellence
Own and continuously improve the day-to-day operations of the business through standard processes and workflows for logistics, trucking coordination, LTL shipping, order fulfillment, and vendor management, ensuring the reliability and responsiveness to customer needs.
Inventory & Supply Chain Management
Lead proactive inventory planning and forecasting across a supply chain that includes internationally sourced products with extended lead times, reducing risk, improving fill rates, and building the capabilities necessary to support a growing business.
Systems and Technology Integration
Drive operational visibility by leading systems decisions, implementations, and upgrades including ERP, inventory, and reporting platforms, building the infrastructure needed to move the business from manual processes to data-driven management.
Strategic Leadership & Financial Accountability
Partner with executive leadership to align operational strategy with company growth and financial goals, translating priorities into clear execution plans with defined KPIs, while improving gross margins through cost discipline, resource optimization, and vendor negotiation.
Team Leadership & Culture
Recruit, develop, and lead a high-performing operations team, fostering a culture of accountability, urgency, and collaboration while building depth and capacity cross-functionally as the company continues to scale.
M & A Readiness & Growth Enablement
Help position DMD for its next stage of growth by building the operational systems, processes, and team capabilities needed to absorb future acquisitions and increased complexity, allowing founders and sales leadership to stay focused on customer relationships and business development.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION
The ideal candidate for the position will match as many of the qualifications as possible listed below:
  • Minimum 10 years of operations, supply chain, or production management experience.

  • Minimum 5 years in a leadership role in a company with similar or greater revenue.

  • Experienced in system and process implementation (ERP, SOPs, KPIs)

  • Proven leadership, communication, and team-building skills.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, operations, Engineering, or related field required. (MBA preferred)

TOTAL COMPENSATION
DMD offers a competitive salary and benefits package based on experience.
THE SEARCH
Sagency, an executive search and leadership consulting firm, has been retained for this Vice President of Operations search.
Sagency consultants will review and evaluate all interested parties to help the hiring manager review a final group for consideration.
The search will be conducted in a professional manner, and all potential candidates will be given consideration. Candidate conversations and information will be handled with great discretion and confidentiality. Sagency and DMD are equal-opportunity employers.
