The Outpatient Infusion Registered Nurse is responsible for coordinating and providing safe, high-quality nursing care for patients receiving outpatient infusions, injections, IV therapies, wound care, vascular access services, and other outpatient treatments. This position serves as the primary nurse for the outpatient infusion program and plays a key role in delivering exceptional patient care, ensuring regulatory compliance, supporting program growth, and collaborating with providers and departments across the organization.

The Infusion Nurse position will be Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm. This schedule will provide overlap coverage after the clinic closes for patients who infusions may extend beyond normal clinic hours. As part of a Critical Access Hospital, this position requires flexibility. While outpatient infusion services are the primary responsibility, the nurse is expected to serve as a clinical resource throughout the hospital. When outpatient patient volume allows, the nurse will assist other departments based on patient care needs and operational priorities.

Essential Job Functions:

Patient Care

• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for outpatient infusion and treatment patients.
• Administer IV medications, biologics, hydration therapy, antibiotics, iron infusions, blood products, injections, osteoporosis medications, immunotherapy, and other prescribed therapies within the RN scope of practice.
• Perform peripheral IV insertion, vascular access management, PICC maintenance, dressing changes, wound care, injections, catheter care, and other outpatient nursing procedures.
• Monitor patients before, during, and after treatment for adverse reactions and initiate appropriate interventions when necessary.
• Provide patient and family education regarding treatments, medications, potential side effects, and follow-up care.
• Accurately document all care in the electronic medical record.

Infusion Program Operations

• Coordinate daily patient scheduling and treatment flow to maximize efficiency and patient satisfaction.
• Collaborate with providers, registration, laboratory, pharmacy, insurance authorization staff, and other departments to facilitate timely patient care.
• Verify provider orders and ensure all required documentation is complete before treatment, including but not limited to submitting prior authorizations.
• Maintain infusion equipment, supplies, emergency medications, and treatment areas.
• Monitor inventory and communicate supply needs.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and assist with the continued growth and development of outpatient infusion services.

Medication Preparation and Pharmacy Collaboration

• Maintain competency in the operation, cleaning, maintenance, and daily documentation of the pharmacy compounding hood and related equipment.
• Prepare medications within the RN scope of practice according to hospital policy, manufacturer guidelines, USP standards as applicable, and organizational procedures.
• Collaborate closely with Avel Pharmacy to ensure medications are prepared safely, accurately, and according to established protocols.
• Maintain required documentation, quality assurance records, and environmental monitoring associated with medication preparation.
• Participate in competency validation and ongoing education related to sterile medication preparation.

Collaboration and Hospital Support

• Assist other nursing departments based on patient care needs and direction from leadership.
• Support Same Day Surgery, Specialty Clinic, Medical-Surgical, Emergency Department (within competency), Cardiac Rehabilitation, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and other outpatient services as appropriate.
• Assist with patient care, clinical procedures, quality improvement activities, stocking, supply management, and other operational needs.
• Return promptly to the infusion department whenever outpatient patient care requires.

Qualifications:

• Current Nebraska Registered Nurse license.
• Current BLS certification.
• ACLS certification within six months of hire (or according to hospital policy)
• Minimum of two years of acute care, emergency, medical-surgical, outpatient, or comparable nursing experience.
• Strong IV insertion and vascular access skills.

Preferred

• Infusion nursing experience
• Sterile compounding experience
• Wound care experience
• PICC management competency

Working Conditions

Primarily office-based with regular computer and phone use. May involve occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds and periodic travel within the facility or external locations for meetings and other work-related activities.
