What is a No Experience Computer Hardware Engineer?

A No Experience Computer Hardware Engineer is an entry-level professional or recent graduate who works with computer hardware, such as processors, circuit boards, memory devices, and networks, but does not yet have significant practical experience in the field. These engineers typically assist with designing, testing, and troubleshooting hardware systems under the supervision of more experienced engineers. Entry-level positions often focus on learning industry standards, gaining hands-on experience, and developing technical skills through on-the-job training. Many employers provide mentorship and training programs to help these engineers grow their expertise. Starting in this role can be an excellent way to launch a career in computer hardware engineering.

What entry-level tasks and responsibilities can I expect as a computer hardware engineer with no prior experience?

As a computer hardware engineer starting out with no experience, you can expect to be involved in supporting senior engineers with testing, assembling, and troubleshooting computer components such as circuit boards, processors, and memory devices. Entry-level roles often include documenting test results, maintaining lab equipment, and assisting with prototype development. You may also help prepare technical reports and collaborate with cross-functional teams like software engineers or manufacturing technicians. This hands-on exposure is designed to build your foundational skills and gradually introduce you to more complex engineering challenges.

What is the difference between No Experience Computer Hardware Engineer vs Computer Hardware Technician?

AspectNo Experience Computer Hardware EngineerComputer Hardware Technician
Required CredentialsEntry-level, often no formal degree, on-the-job trainingHigh school diploma or equivalent, technical certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and development in labs or officesOn-site troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance in various settings
Industry UsageUsed by companies developing new hardware products or systemsCommon in repair shops, IT departments, and service providers

While both roles involve working with computer hardware, a No Experience Computer Hardware Engineer typically focuses on design and development with minimal experience, whereas a Computer Hardware Technician handles installation, troubleshooting, and repairs, often requiring technical certifications and hands-on skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Hardware Engineer with no prior experience, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Hardware Engineer with no prior experience, a strong understanding of computer architecture, electronics, and mathematics is essential, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with design and simulation tools like CAD software, hardware description languages (HDL), and testing equipment is commonly required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills that help new engineers adapt and contribute to projects. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing reliable hardware, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating on complex engineering solutions.

Job description

We are looking for a Hardware Engineer to join our team in Boston, Massachusetts and support the design and deployment of machine vision hardware solutions for industrial applications. This role is ideal for someone with a mechanical engineering foundation who enjoys translating real-world operating conditions into practical camera, lighting, and system configurations. You will work closely with internal teams and customers to improve imaging performance, document deployment standards, and help validate reliable hardware setups for both pilot programs and production environments.

Responsibilities:

• Assess customer environments by reviewing operating conditions such as motion, available space, lighting variability, and mounting limitations to determine effective vision system setups.

• Develop hardware recommendations that align with application needs, including cameras, lenses, illumination components, compute platforms, and network connectivity equipment.

• Refine camera placement, lighting approach, and viewing angles to improve defect detection and overall imaging quality across different use cases.

• Create clear technical documentation such as configuration records, wiring layouts, setup instructions, and deployment diagrams to support repeatable installations.

• Support hands-on testing and qualification activities to confirm hardware performance, durability, and reliability before broader rollout.

• Visit customer sites as needed to assist with installation planning, validate hardware selections, and troubleshoot field performance issues.

• Define hardware use cases for industrial automation environments, including scenarios that may involve integration with programmable logic controllers.

• Partner with cross-functional teams to identify vision-related issues, propose corrective hardware changes, and optimize system designs for production demands.

• At least 2 years of experience working with hardware design, configuration, or deployment in an industrial or technical environment.
• Mechanical engineering background, ideally supported by a completed degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• Experience with machine vision or image-based inspection systems, including an understanding of cameras, lenses, and lighting behavior.
• Ability to produce technical diagrams or CAD-based layouts for hardware configurations, mounting concepts, or wiring plans.
• Familiarity with industrial cameras, LED lighting solutions, and supporting compute hardware used in vision applications.
• Knowledge of image processing concepts and how hardware decisions affect inspection quality and system performance.
• Comfortable working in a hybrid setting with regular time in the Cambridge, Massachusetts office and occasional travel to customer locations.
