No Experience Computer Engineering information

What entry-level tasks can I expect as a computer engineering professional with no prior experience?

As a computer engineering professional starting out with no experience, you will likely begin with foundational tasks such as assisting in hardware testing, debugging basic software, documenting code, and supporting senior engineers with ongoing projects. You may also be involved in assembling prototypes, running performance simulations, and participating in team meetings to learn about project requirements and workflows. These responsibilities are designed to help you build technical skills, gain familiarity with industry tools, and understand team collaboration, all of which are essential for career growth in computer engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Engineer with no prior experience, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Engineer with no prior experience, you typically need a foundational understanding of programming, computer systems, and basic engineering principles, often gained through a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with languages like Python or C++, as well as exposure to development environments and version control systems like Git, is valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, willingness to learn, and effective communication help newcomers adapt quickly and collaborate with more experienced team members. These skills and qualities are important because they enable entry-level engineers to contribute, grow, and build a successful career in a technology-driven field.

Job description

Company Description

We are Olsson. We engineer and design solutions that improve the world around us. As a company, we promise to always be responsive, transparent, and focused on results – for our people, our clients, and our company.

We're a people-centric firm, so it's no surprise our greatest asset is our people. The impact this creates is an environment that encourages our people to grow and be creative with their talents. This approach builds a culture that is uniquely Olsson. It allows us to grow our people as we grow our business. This, in turn, creates a lasting impact on the world around us.

Job Description

As a member of Olsson's Bridge team, you will contribute to a wide range of transportation and infrastructure projects that support safe, efficient, and sustainable communities. You will collaborate with engineers, designers, and technical staff who are committed to quality, teamwork, and practical problem-solving.

In this role, you will support bridge planning and design efforts through CAD drafting and design, assist with research and technical documentation, and participate in field visits and site observations as needed. Depending on your experience level, assignments may range from routine drafting tasks to more complex design support activities, with opportunities to take on increased responsibility over time. As plan development tools and methods continue to evolve you will not only be creating two-dimensional construction plans but also utilizing MicroStation Open Bridge Designer to develop three-dimensional bridge models. These models will be incorporated into daily workflow to promote efficiency, accuracy, and support future trends of Model as Legal Document (MALD) projects.

You will work closely with engineering and design staff to develop and refine bridge layouts, construction documents, and related deliverables. Under appropriate supervision, you will apply established standards, methods, and software while contributing to solutions that help deliver safe and reliable transportation infrastructure. This position offers opportunities for continued learning, skill development, and professional growth within a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications

You are passionate about:

  • Working collaboratively with others.
  • Having ownership in the work you do.
  • Using your talents to positively affect communities.
  • Utilizing new technology to improve workflow process.

You bring to the team:

  • Associate degree in a related field or related experience preferred.
  • This position is open to candidates at various levels of experience, from entry-level to experienced CAD technicians.
  • Experienced candidates should have familiarity with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation Open Bridge Designer; training may be provided based on experience level.
