Job description

In-House Union Compliance Counsel


The California Nurses Association/National Nurses United —the largest union and professional association of registered nurses in U.S. history—is hiring an in-house Compliance Counsel with a demonstrated commitment to the labor movement to work in the CNA/NNU Headquarters in Oakland, California. The Compliance Counsel position is within the Union’s Department of the Executive Special Counsel to provide expert legal advice concerning legal and regulatory compliance to the Departmental Director, the Executive Special Counsel (“ESC Director”).


Responsibilities:

  • DOL Compliance: Assists the ESC Director on internal governance matters, including union officer elections; preparation of LM reports and other DOL reporting duties
  • Campaign Finance Compliance: Assists the ESC Director on federal and state electoral campaign compliance matters, including producing and cataloging PAC financial information for political reporting and audit purposes
  • Lobbying and Ethics Compliance: Assists the ESC Director on preparation and filing of state and federal lobbying reports for lobbying in multiple states and jurisdictions
  • Nonprofit Charitable tax-exemption: Assists the ESC Director on compliance with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(5) regulatory compliance matters
  • Tax Compliance: Assists the ESC Director on annual federal and state tax issues, including but not limited to reporting,
  • All other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor and active bar license in California
  • At least 3 years of experience balancing simultaneous requests through time management and organizational skills, problem solving by research, critically thinking, and using previous experience to achieve organizational goals.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • At least 3 years of experience managing confidential information and sensitive relationships with discretion
  • At least 3 years of experience exercising tact and diplomacy in all dealings with other staff and union leadership
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior compliance experience in campaign finance & federal/state lobbying, DOL and non-profit charitable tax exemption.


Location, Work Mode, Compensation:

  • The position is located at CNA/NNU Headquarters at 155 Grand Ave., Oakland CA, with some opportunity for limited remote work.
  • We offer a competitive annual salary in the range of $127,591 - $170,985 dependent on skills and experience. Generous benefit package including comprehensive family health and dental plan, retirement contributions, and professional development opportunities.
