Job description
Description The City of Jersey City is seeking a Park Attendant to support the Parks Maintenance Division. The Park Attendant - Berry Lane Park (Overnight) is responsible for the oversight, security, cleanliness, maintenance monitoring, and general upkeep of Berry Lane Park during overnight operating hours. The Park Attendant serves as the primary on-site representative of the Division of Parks and is responsible for ensuring all park facilities are properly secured, maintained, and monitored to provide a safe environment for residents and visitors.
This position requires strong attention to detail, independent decision-making, and the ability to coordinate with public safety and municipal departments when necessary. Examples of Duties Job Duties: Conduct routine patrols of Berry Lane Park throughout assigned shifts. Secure and lock all athletic fields, courts, playgrounds, and designated facilities upon arrival and at designated closing times.
Monitor Park grounds for unauthorized activity, vandalism, trespassing, suspicious behavior, or safety hazards. Ensure all gates, entrances, and access points are properly secured. Document incidents, damages, and maintenance concerns through written reports Support communication between Recreation staff and external partners to ensure smooth implementation Inspect all park areas, including athletic facilities, pathways, playgrounds, parking areas, and public gathering spaces.
Ensure trash and litter are removed from park grounds and receptacles are maintained. Monitor restroom facilities for cleanliness, functionality, and supply needs. Report maintenance issues including lighting outages, damaged equipment, graffiti, broken fixtures, hazardous conditions, and infrastructure concerns.
Assist with minor maintenance tasks as directed. Safety & Emergency Response: Serve as the first point of contact for overnight emergencies occurring within the park. Maintain direct communication access with: Jersey City Police Department (JCPD) Department of Public Works (DPW) Division of Parks Supervisors Recreation and Municipal Directors, as necessary Respond appropriately to emergencies, accidents, medical incidents, property damage, and public safety concerns.
Coordinate emergency response efforts until appropriate personnel arrive on scene. Prepare and submit incident reports following emergencies or unusual occurrences. Community Relations: Interact professionally and respectfully with residents, visitors, contractors, and City personnel.
Educate Park users regarding park rules, operating hours, and facility regulations. Assist with resolving minor disputes and quality-of-life concerns while maintaining a safe and welcoming environment. Administrative Responsibilities: Complete daily activity logs and facility inspection reports.
Maintain records of maintenance requests, incidents, and security concerns. Communicate significant issues to supervisors in a timely manner. Additional Duties The duties listed above are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by individuals assigned to this position.

Ability to walk, patrol, and inspect large park areas for extended periods. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in park operations, facilities management, security, maintenance, public works, recreation, or related fields. CPR, First Aid, or Emergency Response certifications preferred.
Valid Driver's License preferred. Ability to work independently during overnight hours. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to walk, patrol, and inspect large park areas for extended periods. Physical Requirements: Ability to walk, stand, climb stairs, and patrol park grounds for extended periods. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations. Working Conditions Primarily outdoor work environment.
Overnight shifts requiring independent operation and decision-making. Exposure to weather conditions, noise, and occasional emergency situations.
