What are Nighthawk Radiology Services?

Nighthawk Radiology Services refer to after-hours or overnight radiology services provided by specialized radiologists, often remotely, to interpret medical imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. These services are designed to support hospitals and clinics by ensuring timely and accurate diagnostic reports during nighttime or off-peak hours when in-house radiologists may not be available. Nighthawk radiologists typically work in different time zones or follow overnight shifts to provide continuous coverage, helping to speed up patient care and support emergency departments. Many healthcare facilities use Nighthawk services to maintain 24/7 radiology coverage, improve workflow, and enhance patient outcomes.

What is the difference between Nighthawk Radiology Services vs Radiologic Technologist?

AspectNighthawk Radiology ServicesRadiologic Technologist
CredentialsTypically licensed radiologists or radiology providersCertification and licensing required (ARRT)
Work EnvironmentRemote reading centers, hospitals, clinics, overnight shiftsHospitals, clinics, outpatient facilities, daytime and some night shifts
Employer & IndustryMedical imaging companies, hospitals, telehealth servicesHospitals, diagnostic imaging centers, outpatient clinics

While Nighthawk Radiology Services primarily involves remote interpretation of imaging studies by radiologists, radiologic technologists perform the imaging procedures themselves. Both roles are essential in medical imaging but differ in responsibilities, credentials, and work settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Nighthawk Radiology Services, and why are they important?

To thrive in Nighthawk Radiology Services, you need board certification in radiology, strong diagnostic skills, and experience with emergency and after-hours imaging. Familiarity with advanced PACS systems, teleradiology platforms, and relevant state or national medical licenses is typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for timely and accurate reporting. These skills ensure rapid, high-quality interpretations and support continuous patient care during overnight or off-hours shifts.

What are the unique challenges and rewards of working night shifts in Nighthawk Radiology Services?

Working night shifts in Nighthawk Radiology Services often means handling a higher volume of urgent cases, such as trauma and emergency imaging, which can be both challenging and rewarding. Radiologists must maintain high levels of accuracy and efficiency despite working during unconventional hours, which can impact sleep and work-life balance. However, the role offers opportunities for professional growth through exposure to diverse cases and collaboration with emergency physicians across various locations. Many radiologists also appreciate the autonomy and quiet work environment typical of night shifts.

Job description

Job Description:

Diagnostic Imaging Services (DIS) is currently seeking a dedicated on-site Radiologist to join our growing private practice. Our radiologists provide comprehensive diagnostic imaging services across the Cleveland Clinic Martin Health System, serving three hospitals and two outpatient centers in Southeast Florida’s Treasure Coast. DIS offers one of the last true and equal partnership opportunities in the region, within an equitable group structure. The practice is supported by a stable contract, recently renewed for three years, with automatic renewal in place.

Position Highlights:

  • Desirable daytime schedule available
  • Preference for Abdominal or Neuro radiologists, but all diagnostic radiologists of any subspecialty will be considered, including general radiologists
  • Up to 40–50% subspecialty focus, with the remainder in general and ER radiology
  • Fellowship-trained radiologists in any subspecialty welcome if aligned with group culture
  • Employed as well as partnership track positions available
  • Weekends and holidays equally shared
  • Nighthawk coverage from 9:00 PM–7:00 AM
  • Up to 50% of shifts eligible for remote (teleradiology) work

Why the Treasure Coast of Florida?

The Treasure Coast—anchored by Stuart and Martin County—offers an exceptional balance of career opportunity and quality of life. Known for its upscale coastal atmosphere, the area maintains its natural beauty through thoughtful growth management, avoiding the congestion of larger Florida metros. Enjoy uncrowded beaches, abundant outdoor recreation, and a vibrant yet relaxed downtown with waterfront dining, arts, and cultural events.

Families benefit from top-ranked public and private schools, safe neighborhoods, and a strong sense of community. The region offers diverse housing options at a more accessible cost of living compared to South Florida, along with no state income tax. Convenient access to Palm Beach, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami further enhances its appeal.

Recognized as #5 Best Place to Live (Niche), the Treasure Coast is an ideal destination for physicians seeking a coastal, family-friendly lifestyle without sacrificing professional fulfillment.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Competitive employee or partnership track compensation
  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • Paid time off: 14 weeks for partners; 8 weeks for employees
  • Malpractice insurance covered by the practice
  • Retirement includes 401K, in addition to profit sharing components
  • Health insurance premiums fully covered for physician and dependents
  • Robust Moonlighting opportunities available (e.g., MRI reads at $75 per read)

Candidate Requirements:

  • M.D. or D.O. with residency training in Diagnostic Radiology
  • Board-certified or board-eligible (ABR or AOBR)
  • Fellowship training of any subspecialty is preferred, but not required.
  • MQSA Certification required to read DX mammo and screening reads
  • Active Florida medical license or eligibility to obtain one
  • Comfortable to perform light procedures
  • Flexibility to practice across multiple locations in Stuart and Port St. Lucie, Florida; current partners and employees reside in Martin or Palm Beach counties, offering short commute option from either area.
